The Untold Truth Of Dune

"Dune" may be a new movie in 2021, but as a sci-fi story and media franchise, it should be seen as one of the first, at least when it comes to the modern era.

The novel by Frank Herbert, written in 1965, is one of the most popular sci-fi books in the history of the medium, giving way to five sequels by Herbert and many more prequels and sequels by other writers.

Before director Denis Villeneuve blew the sand off the material for a new big-screen adaptation, the story was adapted for film by David Lynch, a miniseries for the Sci-Fi Channel, and more. Wondering what you've been missing out on? This is the untold truth of "Dune."

Never heard about Dune at all before this movie, I absolutely LOVED it. Great world building, amazing visuals, great casting, awesome cinematography absolutely phenomenal film. That being said, Star Wars sure did take so much from this franchise.

The fundamental thing with Villeneuve's movies is that he is using a kind of sophisticated and slow paced cinematic language, reminiscent of Tarkovsky's films. Meditative, slow, with a lot of attention to visuals, that tell their own story. Which I personally love, and I consider both his Dune and Blade Runner to be exceptional films, but let's face it, this kind of movies are rarely a commercial success. Most modern commercially successful films are like fast food, and this is where the money are. I hope to see more of his Dune vision, but after all we live in a world where Twin Peaks was cancelled, and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner 1982 version was also commercial fail.

I didn’t realize dune flopped in the theater. I saw on VHS and was blown away 25 years ago.

David Lynch’s Dune has been a yearly treat for me since I was a kid. Without it, I’m afraid I never would have found Frank Herbert. I’m not sure my father would have ever read the book and shared it with me.

Honestly, one of the best movies I've seen in years. Very reminiscent of Bladerunner 2049. A true, unashamed, Science Fiction movie for adults. Loved it.

I don't care what anybody has got to say concerning Any negative comments against this movie. I love the original Dune movie when it first came out, and it's still on my top 10 movie list after all these years! So I can't wait to see the new one when it comes out. I may be weird, but I don't think anything will ever surpass the first one, at least in my eyes. Although the new one will probably be good, the first one took me into my first science fiction/ fantasy journey. Its uniqueness at the time and just general overall look and feel was something I'll never forget. I'm happy to still own a copy of this movie, which I still watch regularly!🤗😊❤️

There's a torrent out there called the Dune Third Stage Fan Edit. It adds all the parts that were dropped from the 1984 theatrical release and rearranges the scenes to be more cohesive. It's about 45 mins longer than the theatrical release.

I must have been one of the rare geeks that loved the 1984 Dune movie. Can't wait to see the 2021 version!

"Having published a few successful science fiction novels already, Herbert went to Florence in 1957."

Only if by "a few" you mean just one. Frank Herbert's first published novel, The Dragon in the Sea, was serialized in a magazine in 1955 and 1956 and appeared in book form in 1956. His next book was Dune, which as you mentioned was published in book form in 1965.

Many years ago I read Frank Herbert's classic, I recall not being able to put it down and feeling disappointment that it ended. I remember the characters being memorable and having depth as well as a meaningful relationship with Paul. The story was layered and detailed. The movie I just watched was amazing for it's scenery but none of the characters were fleshed out, none of the relationships were developed and the story was presented like cliff notes as though it was assumed that the viewer was familiar with the content and didn't need any background information. Every character seemed shortchanged with a cameo appearance or walk on. It occurred to me by the end that this may have been better presented as a ten or fifteen hour series rather than in movie form.
