The more accepted theory as to why the PS2 sold so well was actually... the DVD player! Yup, most people don't remember but the cheapest DVD player back then was like 300$ iirc which was basically the cost of the PS2 at launch so it was very easy for fathers and sons back then to convince the family to buy a PS2 since the family gets a DVD player AND the latest videogame console, win-win for the whole family! Nowadays most people barely use discs and if they do, they're bluray discs which is also regarded as one of the reasons the PS3 sold well too, just not at launch

It's amazing how Valve is in a position where it could announce that they'll make a third installment in one of their franchises, and most people would think Half-Life 3, but Valve has the unique position that technically every other franchise they have also fits the requirement of being a third entry.

There's nothing like perusing thru mags like PSM, Next Generation, EGM, Computer Gaming World, etc.
i still remember things like how the pages felt and the weight of the magazines (NExt Generation was the heaviest)

Regardless of expectations, I think that people will just be happy to see Half Life 3 to be a game that continues the story regardless if it has innovative gameplay or not. If Half Life 3 would be released it will sell regardless, so Valve has little to lose here.

For the comment of the day, It was pretty much first on the scene offering a lot of good features (at an affordable price). Being a dvd player made it even more super enticing, and the backwards compatibility for ps1 memory cards and games helped a lot. The great PS2 games that came out later were the cherry on top.

Playstation 2 was the cheapest DVD player available at the time. My parents bought me the PS2 to also use it as a DVD player.

Imagine how broken the system is when the stock market goes nuts because the Yen gets stronger. 🤦🏻‍♂️
The Yen has been 1$= 110~120¥ for over a decade and then the US started this cycle by raising interest rates.
We’ve had 1$=150~170¥ for the last two years. While we, the normal people who work get the same salary while having to pay the raised prices all those companies and brokers made a bonkers amount of money because of the cheap Yen. Tourists came flooding in droves in 2023 and 2024 and Japan has made as much money as never before.
It’s been long overdue that the Bank of Japan finally raises interest rates.
The Yen has only recovered 10~15 Yen and brokers panic? If they do, they are unfit for that job. As a professional in that field you should know that this is a short time hiccup because the Yen is recovering and it will continue to happen until the Yen is back to 1$=115¥.

Imagine the insanity that people are worried about the japanese stock exchange having the lowest rate since the black monday in ‘87 when just a couple of weeks and months ago the japanese stock exchange was the highest it has ever been.

The system is indeed rigged and run by idiots while we plebs pay the price.
Microsoft just announced that they’ll increase the price for the Series X in Japan. Apple has basically doubled their prices since Covid.
And once prices are up they will never come down. Even if the Yen would be 1$=100¥ and it would hold for a year or longer, these prices will never come down for us citizens because companies love reasons to raise prices and ignoring reasons to bring prices down and then, while working us to death and giving us low wages, they want to take all our money for their overpriced products.

PS2 was the biggest launch in gaming as far as hype goes. I’ve been there for every PlayStation and can’t compare the momentum behind the PS2. The world was a different place back then - no phones being the biggest difference - and people actually got together to do more than curate their social media. 🤣

PS2 sold 150M+ units because of GTA3 (trilogy) and it's DVD player. GTA3 was a whole new experience that brought in a huge market, and it was bought multiple times in house holds because it was a DVD player and if you wanted to buy a console for your kid, and you bought DVDs, it was the only console out of the box that could do this. I actually think Wii probably would have lasted until the Switch if it could output 720p and play DVDs out of the box.

I think another reason the ps2 did well was because it was one of the first systems that didn’t feel like a kids toy . It fell in line with 90s' tube. Between that, the multimedia aspect, momentum from the ps1, sega on its death bad and Nintendo doing mediocre in sales it was a perfect storm.
