I love how Messmer's phase 1 ost, which starts at 0:21, sounds a lot like a darker and more woeful version of the main theme/ Radagon's theme (listen carefully to the motif). It reflects his character perfectly

Messmer is probably my favorite demigod child of Marika. The internal struggle he faces when it comes to his mother is beyond beautifully written. He loved her enough to become everything she wanted him to be, a symbol of fear and tyranny, and he loved her enough to hold back his serpent curse for so long, fully knowing she locked him away forever. He repeats his duty to himself in third person as if trying to hold onto some stability in his existence without tearing himself up internally over his mother's actions. He loves her - he keeps an intact statue of her in his room and apologizes for accepting his curse - and yet he utterly despises her for how she wronged him, especially with how after all that pain he went through, his mother gave away the status of Elden Lord to the very people he was ordered and doomed to hunt forever. 10/10 character.

I just finished this fight and it might be my favorite in the entire game. He epitomizes fromsoft’s philosophy for difficulty: tough but fair. In this case, really tough but fair. Every time I fought him, I never felt as though it was some bullshit move or design choice that killed me (unlike another in the base game), but rather my own personal mistakes, whether they be mis-timing a dodge, getting greedy with my attacks, paying too much attention to the great music, or accidentally staying on my physick flask instead of switching to crimson tears. I learned from every mistake I made in each attempt and in my successful run, I applied every piece of knowledge I had gained about the fight up to that point. That’s the mark of a great souls boss. Also his music and voice acting are amazing, and the whole fight just feels so badass
