Messmer the Impaler has a line of cut dialogue that suggests miquella came to talk to him. This could clue is in to why Miquella abandoned his arm and greatrune in Shadow Keep.

Messmer had a public friendship with Gaius and Radahn under the same teacher. I think it's safe to say that he probably knew all of the demigods.

Everyone says Mesmer hates us bc we are stripped of the grace of gold. The whole plot of the game is that Tarnished have been granted grace again, and have been tasked with becoming Elden Lord. He hates us BECAUSE we were re-given grace, and also hates Marika for it too.

Messmer feels betrayed in more ways than one. He had faith in his mother even after so many backstabs and betrayals, he still believed he would be taken back and given grace again
everything crumbled and seeing you being given grace over him, her loyal son is what made him snap. She chose a lightless nobody over her own son that she sent on a crusade and trapped him there forever

Actually the reason Mesmer fights us is because after being in the realm of shadows for years alone on the crusade, he realizes that his mother didn’t care about him at all

Being of the same family, Miquella must have known of messmer's mission (especially after visiting the keep.)
Knowing that Miquella had little words for us at the end of the DLC, despite a brief "out of my way" sentiment, it stands to reason that miquella wished messmer to stop, or otherwise delay us on our pursuit of enir-ilim. He didn't want to be disturbed, and was aware that we wished to prevent his ascension to godhood.

If there were ANY intentions beside him fighting us, Miquella would likely stand to benefit from charming messmer to manipulate him for any other potential scheme. The fight is the only outcome i can see that *doesn't* require that failsafe. Messmer would want us dead by his own, or marika's will, regardless.

Looking at when and where Miquella's great rune was shattered, we were RIGHT behind him. The whole DLC was a race, and Messmer's arena was our pitstop.

It looks like the line where Messmer speaks of Miquella is supposed to be alternate dialogue, not in the same line as when he calls you an intruder.
It should have been, "Miquella spoke of thee. Thou'rt Tarnished, it seemeth."

Messmer is also spealing of his "younger sister" Melina who were the first children of Marika, born in elsewhetre and lived in the land of shadows and before she left and met her first lord, she just left and left her firstborns in the land of shadow with no true bodies.

I’m personally glad that this got cut, I prefer messmer to have his own l separate storyline rather than just being tied back to miquella.

Well we know miquella would have tried to charm messmer. Which makes it even worse. Poor guy cant catch a break.

Messmer was full intended to keep us away from Enir-Ilim and the gate of divinity. He sent us to our death.

The dialogue also confirms that Marika has been guiding us with Grace. Probably something like “Our mother’s champion will come to meet you, ”

Miquella can ask his family himself. He has the best chance of convincing him. Messmer likely refused, so Messmer has to die so that tree can be burned. I actually dont know why Miquella wont just charm messmer and gain another minion... perhaps he doesnt like the risk of getting impaled.

I don’t think miquella intended or necessarily wanted us to find our way to the gate of divinity but knew it was a possibility and so told Messmer about who and what we are possibly because he knew Messmer would feel inclined to fight us because of it if we did show up

Something interesting to note is people keep calling Messmer's eye an "Iris of Grace"... but it isn't... if you look, you'll notice it looks EXACTLY like the Marika's Scarseal Talisman found in Siofra River under the waterfall by the Dragonkin Soldier. The description even mentions that its an eye bearing Marika's sigil, and that those chosen by the gods bear the heaviest burdens or something of the sort, so I thought that was pretty cool of them to give an older talisman an appearance. Some additional evidence here is that when he takes his eye out, it shatters. It doesn't squish like a normal eye would. It clearly makes a shattering sound, making it a glass eye and not what seems to be a contact lens with the available image for the iris of grace.

I guarantee you miquella song messmer's death as a necessity for his plan. Why else would he include a hornsent who has sworn himself to bring about mesmer's death among his ranks
