How To Block An Application From Accessing The Internet In Windows 11/10 [Tutorial]

Most of the third-party software that resides on your computer can access the internet, and there are times when you might not want specific programs installed on your system to gain access to the internet.

For instance, you might not want to check for updates continuously, you might be annoyed with constant ads that keep showing up, or you might be worried about any sensitive data in your software. If the essential features of the application do not rely on internet connectivity, you can block a program from accessing the internet altogether.

Issues addressed in this tutorial:
block application accessing internet
block app internet access windows 11
windows firewall block application accessing internet
how to block application from accessing internet
block or allow applications accessing internet in windows 11
block app to access internet windows 11

Most of the time we want our applications online and connected to both our local network and the greater Internet. There are instances, however, when we want to prevent an application from connecting to the Internet.

If you want to block an application from accessing the internet on Windows 11 and Windows 10 computers, here is how you can do that. There are mainly two methods to prevent an app from using the internet connection on your computer – using Windows Defender Firewall and using third-party software.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Alienware, Razer, MSI, Huawei , Microsoft Surface, and Samsung.

I have a portable app on my desktop that needs to be blocked. By this method, if i copy the program to somewhere else, then it regains access. Is there any method to block an application (lets say the process name in task manager) regardless of the path?

Can I do this to allow me to use a single licensed app on 2 computers? I have a program that has to be on my laptop but works much better on my desktop. Its a pain having to contact them to swap it over every week. It also costs them time and me time.

Bat file that will act as a shortcut for turning specific app rule off and on (change 'named rule' to what you want to be turned off and on):
@echo off
:: Check for administrative privileges
net session >nul 2>&1
if %errorlevel% neq 0 (
echo Requesting administrative privileges...
powershell -command "Start-Process '%~f0' -Verb runAs"
exit /b
)

:: Toggle the "'named program'" firewall rule
netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name="'named rule'" | findstr "^Enabled:.*Yes$"
if %errorlevel% == 0 (
echo Disabling firewall rule
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name="'named rule'" new enable=no
) else (
echo Enabling firewall rule
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name="'named rule'" new enable=yes
)
pause
