"Apple knows you'll just buy their new crap anyway." Yep, that's why I've never bought or even tried an iPhone or any Apple product since those days of playing Oregon Trail in 4th/5th grade. The reason Apple stuff works well with other Apple stuff should be obvious, but it's a walled garden that doesn't like you playing with anyone else. They want you continually buying their iProducts every year for astronomical amounts of money. You're a sucker and they know they can milk a lot of money from you and it's just sad that you can't see that for yourself. I'm from a time before computers so maybe I'm a bit biased against technology we just don't fucking need.

Nonetheless, I remain excited for the iPhone 17 lineup, especially since I've never had an iPhone. The only truly appealing thing to me about this year's lineup is the Pro series' larger screens and its 4K 120FPS ProRes video recording via its camera control button. I'm disappointed it can't record spatial video at 4K, let alone 60fps, but I don't have a Vision Pro to worry about the footage quality.

Look, you buy what works for you. My first family computer was an Apple IIe purchased around 1980-82 (somewhere in there). My first one was a Macintosh Plus purchased in 1988. I used it all through college and all the way until 1997. I then used a Mac clone until 2003, a power Mac g4 until 1997 (which then went to my wife for another few years), when I got an intel iMac which was my main computer for a decade, handled more basic things for another few years before being handed off to a friend in 2021 who installed Linux on it for his young daughter to use. I’m now using an M2 Mac Studio, an M1 MacBook Air, and a iPad Pro for music production among other things, as well as my 3rd self built Windows machine, and an Orange Pi 5 series. I’ve also been using iPhones since 2008 (not upgrading for at least 2 years at a time normally). I wrote a good chunk of my Master’s thesis on an iPad, and my daughter is still using my old iPhone X. It can’t run past iOS 16.x but my kid has been perfectly happy with it for the last 4 years and counting. If android had come first, would have used it at least to start with.
I ask this, not to start a flame war, but because I’m really curious. Is there an example of an android phone from the same time period that can still be used? My point is simply that they’re all tools and we each decide what works best for our needs. I happen to prefer Apple devices for my day to day activities and work and there is some new functionality coming in the new phones that will be quite useful to me. I’m going to pick one up and use it like crazy. If it proves to not be as useful as I hope, I’ve got 14 days to return it no questions asked.
