One thing I really admire about your videos is the fact that you repeatedly stress that everybody's ears are different. Too often (much too often) reviews will state simply that "this is the best ____ (fill in the blank) made today at any price." What nonsense! This is music, not mathematics. There is no right and wrong answer. Yet, sadly, people believe it and find it frustrating when they can't afford it or can afford it, but don't like it, and think they must be at fault because a "professional reviewer" told them otherwise. So thanks again Mike!

Man-o-Manischewitz you said a mouthful. Very good advice, lucidly explained. To bad the meter on your shirt isn't -40 to +10, now that's a meter. You touch on room acoustic issues (i.e. standing waves and room nodes) with good suggestions. Yes, we can get vintage "quality" components that won't break the bank and sound swell to boot. My recent lucky finds were from my hifi service shop. I got a Denon DRM-800A cassette deck for $125. My first cassette deck in 1975 was a budget Pioneer CT-f2121for $127. Also got some sweet speakers; Ohm Acoustics model H systems that were $700+ in late 1970's for $250 the pair. Restored (with Ohm drivers) cosmetically and sonically. A freakin' steal. Can't find any fault in your advice but as always caveat emptor.

Here's how I'd build my setup if I had the money:
Amp: A Vintage One (Preferably a Japanese one)
Speakers: whatever I find for a good price on eBay
Soutces-
Vinyl: Pioneer PL600 (it's a great turntable from the late 70s)
Cassette: Preferably an old JVC deck
CDs: Not sure

If he’s going the used route, I’d highly recommend to the OP that he explore used for amp/speakers, not CD player. I’ve rarely had luck getting a used CD player that held up over time. Whereas Amp/Speakers can still be solid when used.

Excellent $1, 000 solution! Here is my $5, 000 solution: Audiolab 7000CDT ($675), Musician Audio Pegasus ($1250), Marantz PM-8006 ($1600), Dynaudio Evoke 10 ($1500).

If you are looking to get used audio components, don't go to thrift stores, pawn shops or indoor flea markets. These spots have become notorious for using auction sites as a price metric. In other words: You will run the risk of paying a lot more for equipment that doesn't justify the price...or worse, may not be properly serviced to reflect said price.

I would honestly stay well away from buying second hand audio equipment on eBay etc.
