I'm not joking when I say this, my best friends dad went to build a custom home and had multiple bids for a average of 1.1 million. He is a very smart guy, and ultimately decided to subcontract out the build himself and got the house built for $760k. So yes there is a lot of "fat" you can trim when you cut out the middle man. Let me be clear, it was a LOT of leg work he had to do for the better part of a year.

I’m late to the party, but I have to say I’m so glad you put the truth out there finally. I’ve been remodeling my house in my free time and one day I was just minding my own business at a big box store and a guy started talking to me about how much they mark up sub quality lumber when you can go to a local specialty contractor supply store and buy studs for just over $1. A DOLLAR! Think about THAT for a minute. The media just repeats the lies about supply chain “problems” and “natural disasters” and other BS like so many people wanting to build a house blah blah. And that’s how we all get screwed. So, I’m doing all this major renovation by myself, it doesn’t even take two people to do this work, I’ve put in so many LVL beams by myself and it’s nothing. And I’m a full time mom to a small toddler on top of it all. I just got sick and tired of being lied to that building is hard, that it’s expensive and that supplies are hard to come by. Whatever, I’m going to spend the rest of nap time putting in all the new windows that were just delivered.

Houses today are built like trash. You can break in through the wall Builders use foam insulated boards instead of plywood.
Pine wood framing A 2x4 isn’t truly 2x4.
Framers work hard but they aren’t building houses to last anymore. For what you get today. It should be $20 a sq foot.

I knew this was a joke, but I've found that trades DO overcharge by a lot. The concrete companies near me are charging 3 times the average, just because nobody questions it.

Quit misguiding customers, everyone knows we as contractors don't have to work on Saturdays!
We start our new builds on Monday's around noon, and we are usually done by Friday at lunch time, that's why we have time to do Friday Feast! lol

This is hilarious, and so true ! I used to work for a company that sold a wide variety of products to contractors. My job was to work with homebuilders to show them what their builder (our customer) was putting in their house. People are insane with wanting something for nothing!

Loved it! My Mom was always worried about me when roofing. She often told me to tie a rope around the chimney and the other end around my neck. That way I wouldn’t get hurt by hitting the ground if I fell off. Yup, no worker’s compensation needed!
