The USA seems to have lost the concept of what it takes to live in a civil society and the duty of responsibility required. Doesn't help when they see the bad examples of the GOP leaders and the Christian Nationalists

I became a Junior NRA Member at age 12. Life Member at 18. And was a Benefactor Member for many years. I quit in 2012. As they opposed all legislation that would have provided real gun safety. And it was apparent they were standing behind and supporting extremist candidates.

I am no longer a gun owner and now live in Costa Rica.

What bothers me, is the same people that scream about their “ freedom “ when it comes to guns, are the same people that don’t think taking away women’s bodily autonomy is a violation of freedom.

As someone who has had a loaded gun turned on me by someone I should have been able to trust and who I thought loved me, I can tell you it was an extremely scary few seconds. Why this person thought it was okay to have a loaded rifle propped up in a corner behind a door is beyond me. Once I managed to calm him down I never discussed anything further with him. Left the house, got a lawyer, and got divorced from him as fast as I could.

As a Canadian I’m so sorry that America has turned into a gun mania. Not that Canada is perfect…by far it’s not. But guns here are mostly controlled. I’d be scared to have kids in schools today. I’m 76.

As a firearm owner, I am extremely disappointed how the NRA and Republicans have not taken firearms seriously over the past 15-20 years. Their motivation is driven by $$$$ by using fear.

I was a teacher for 42 years....we didn't want 'bad teachers' in our midst anymore than the public would want them there....they give us as a whole - who are trying to do their jobs (under very trying conditions sometimes) a bad name. And now we have people convinced that we are grooming, indoctrinating, SO MANY things that aren't even in our curriculum!!! If you have heard these things or believe them -- GO into YOUR school and ASK questions -- this is ridiculous....Just b/c Rs are saying "Oh this is happening or that" in our schools - do they even HAVE children in that school system? OR are they there to spread propaganda (b/c this IS a R tenet right now)?? What I"m seeing is people believing the rhetoric from people who have no other interest in that school, or that states education system other than to cause chaos....and the result are school boards, teachers, are being threatened!! That's crazy folks - we are your neighbors, your families, your friends....ASK QUESTIONS to the right people not just listen to the noise.

Thanks for bringing quality information to the gun conversation.

My best example of gun issues. The amount of people who carry a loaded gun into an airport because they forgot. How do you forget your carrying a gun. At that point its not a tool. Its an accessory like your watch.

I belonged to the NRA at a very young age, in the 70s. I am a certified NRA sharpshooter bar 11 or more? I don't quite remember, it was a very long time ago, but I still have the medals and certificates to prove it.
We would go every week during the Summers, for year after year to shoot at a high school, of all places, when I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout. This was long before mass shootings...
I stopped when we moved across the country and couldn't find a decent scout troop. I also went hunting and plinking on my grandfather's ranch.
Anyways, I say all that to let it be known that I am in no way anti gun, nor unfamiliar with them. However, I believe that it is virtually criminal what the NRA has morphed into. I've seen some videos from them that are outright disturbing and borderline inciting violence. I was absolutely shocked and will never again have anything to do with them. Not unless they were to do a 180° about face, make a public statement of their wrongs, then completely and totally get behind sensible gun safety laws.

I don't care who you are, your gun does not come before the safety of our nations children.

Get rid of Heavy military artery in gun shop. Can’t understand why authorities allow these types to ever leave the factories .

Such an excellent episode, I look forward to reading the book. I raised my daughters in Los Angeles. They are millennials and have distinct age related memories of 9/11. I on the other hand am one of those pesky boomers that covid somehow missed. My first sense of the bigger world came on November 22 1963. I was in my school classroom when a teacher knocked on the door and was crying and had a brief conversation with my teacher who then started to cry. She explained school was being let out early at that moment the office intercom announced “all students please rise for the pledge”… it’s an odd clear memory of the day.

Then the dismissal bell rang as I walked the four blocks from school to home with other kids on my block we were baffled. Then one of the kids said what the heck is with the cars? Grown women and men were pulling over and crying this was the first day in my life I saw a man cry.

When I got home my Mom was surprised to see me I explained about the class. She said well honey something really terrible happened today. Several days later my father took me to DC for Kennedy’s funeral. Many years later I asked him as he was a Ruby Red Republican why he’d go to the funeral. He just looked at me and said he was the President of the USA, and as a citizen of this scheme he owed him all respect and honor. It didn’t bother him that as soon as I could register to vote I registered as a Democrat(he figured my Mom was to blame)

But I’m a liberal democrat he was a conservative republican and yet we could sit around the Thanksgiving table and talk about issues without someone throwing mashed potatoes or dishes breaking.

My daughters grew up in a public school system which has active shooter drills the way we had fire drills.

I completely agree we have reached the ten year window in which America will sort itself out or collapse from the inside out.

My younger daughter is a behavioral therapist and works in many public schools. In the past 4 years she has experienced lockdown alerts three times. Twice, there was a verified threat on campus. At elementary and middle schools.

Yay for programs like this one where civilized discourse is required. Maybe we will make it? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️👍

I’m glad you said you love the United States and that you wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else. I was born and raised here in the U.S. and if things go White Christian Nationalist Authoritarian I will definitely leave my country. We have to stay engaged and push back.

Anthony!! Ryan!! What a GREAT CONVERSATION!!! Thank you sooo much!! 🙏
Ryan, I was born and raised in Montana. I feel you!! We have guns that we hunt with, target practice and compete in competition. There are plenty of people who are responsible with guns. Unfortunately too many don't know how lucky they are and insist on abusing everything....
