The key for the stars to go in is when you break the rock using noelle, or someone with claymore weapon, switch immediately to your anemo character when you're next to pillar.

IMPORTANT: I had trouble getting the star to go in, until I read a comment that said you MUST use a GEO character. Anemo Traveler will not work.
