The cult of Dionysus is one of the mysteries of anciet Grece.

We know that the Greeks were scared to death of Dionysus, god of wine. That's the reason why they organised those big holidays during winter (and, in a later time, spring), where it was mandatory to take part for whole city of Athens.
Probably, the first forms of tragic theatre come from odes dedicated to Dionysus.

The women that were part of the cult, the Bacchantes or Maenads, once every few months would retire on a mountain and enter trance. They probably believed that they were predators, and would hunt other humans, mostly men, because they thought they were their prey.

Other than that, we don't know much of this cult. We know that after the Romans saw for the first time the things that the Bacchantes did during their trance, banned this "celebration".
