Here I discover whether the Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspbian can play YouTube videos in Chromium.

Details:
- Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (4GB)
- Raspbian Buster (20190710)
- Chromium 74.0.3729.157
- Monitor resolution was 1920x1080

Raspberry pi 3 can easily play 1080p, just not from a browser :) So I assume that raspberry pi 4 can easily play 4k, just not from a browser. I watch movies on the pi, from a usb stick :)

Thanks for a clear answer to the one question I had about the rpi4. Doesn't seem worth it to me. At least not yet.

This was the primary question I had before even buying a Pi and starting to work on it. If it works for youtube and general browsing and lower processing things it would be a cool TV Media Center option, or for a spare bedroom or something.

I heard that sometimes choppy framerates are because of hardware acceleration enabled in chromium by default. Maybe try disabling it it settings?

With time the drivers should catch up and i bet it will run things buttery smooth (This version of the raspberry pi introduced new open source drivers, which are rough around the edges). Also, a little bit of an overclock on the gpu and cpu, the new firmware for keeping the board cooler, and a heatsink + small fan would help greatly i bet.

Did maybe tried an later OS on it after the video, would love to see 1080p with less frame dropes and no screen tearing.

Thank you man . Thousand of videos on youtube about how powerfull this device is but no one try to fucking test is where is matter most, th supreme test is youtube, if you want to use it as a media player is not worth it.

solve youtube tearing : sudo mv /usr/src/ && reboot

It's the 1080p 60fps that's causing the stuttering. I'm pretty sure 1080p videos (30fps) play fine.

I have never bought raspberry before and I don’t know if I should return my order or not.

I still don't get how raspis still struggle with 1080p quad cores 8 gig ram 500mhz gpu... it's more than enough least it should be. So okay it struggles from browser, so is there not a work around? Regardless of Pis spec they run slower than you'd think.
Sounds like I'm bashing on them.. i'm really not, they're crazy cheap amazing little machines, I've learned so much from owning them, GPIO easily being my fave thing.... Just "can it run youtube" when we should be asking "can it run crysis" lol

Man I was considering to build one of these for a TV in another room to stream video. This is pretty terrible. If $35 sounds too good to be true, it probably is LOL!

Why not try a standard 1080 30 frames, this is a bit of a ridiculous test

Why do I always feel like Linux hates me. No matter what distro I have on laptops except my current mint set up has the most sluggish YouTube performance. My new PI 4 8GB ram runs YouTube choppy as all heck on 240p

This is awful. You obviously have a raspberry pi 3, which is test and confirmed to work with youtube, and you're pretending it's a raspberry pi 4b. Shame on you.
