This Raspberry Pi alternative's worth a look! #shorts

Having trouble finding a Raspberry Pi 4 model B? This SBC is way faster, with a ton more features! The footprint is slightly larger, and there are some caveats when it comes to running Linux, but it's worth a deeper look!

I plan on doing a full review next year, when I'm back to work again. Right now I'm still recovering, so it'll be some time before I can really put it through its paces!

Hey everyone! I'm not particularly fond of shorts (or vertical video for that matter), but I do find it a nice way to distill some quick information into a 1 minute bit. I think I may do this every month or two if I have a project I'm working on where I want to show some interesting tidbits but I'm not ready to make the full video yet!

I recorded this a few weeks ago, before the surgery. Recovery's been... okay so far. But still have a long way to go before I can get back to my office/studio in the basement! (I haven't even attempted a flight of stairs yet!).

I had a little time this weekend where I felt up to editing, so I put together this short. Hope you like it!

One thing I like the fact you highlighted is the OS situation... i see a lot of people saying (in comments across youtube) 'who needs to buy a Pi anymore with sooo many other cheap boards with x y and z' but then totally gloss over that kernel support is often either barly there or never updated, or just the use of older patches that limit stuff and then potentially never get touched etc... vs the Pi that has a ton of 1st party maintainer support etc..

It does feel like too many companies build a board they can sell, knock up a fairly unpolished OS kernel for it, but then never touch it again or provide any real long term support, always rolling out a new product with no thought about supporting previous ones...

When you do the full review, please also look at power consumption - especially in comparison to a used Intel NUC (or NUC-alike) that's likely similar in price and has even more features.

This is so perfectly looped that I watched half of the video again before realizing that it looped.

And the software ecosystem that the Rpi has is its strength, as you've said. Running on a system that you have to wait for the manufacturer to update means that of you have a problem, you're going to have a Problem with a capital P which rhymes with T and that stands for Trouble.

I got my original pi, a Pi Zero, for $5 and the 3B for, I think, $35. The times they sure have changed!

damn, some creators try to do looping shorts but you really goddamn mastered this artform.

really shows how your script-writing and presenting/voiceover skills have evolved. I mean, apart from the clean editing :)

Dude! That loop was the most perfect loop.

This looks pretty promising! I hope sometime soon, you'll be able to run a full experience Windows in these small boards without any issues. No limitations due to weak chips, low bandwidths, not enough RAM or missing connectivity. Installing such machines in offices or giving rural communities access to the world with these could change so much and also save energy! I am amazed by what's already possible!

Hi Jeff, Greeting from the UK. I hope your health is holding up. Looks interesting board but as always OS / software support is always the weak spot. These days I think low end NUC devices offer better for money as long as they run Intel CPUs - not AMD - as Intel CPUs provides access to hardware transcoding and full x64 OS support. V4l2m2m just isn’t there yet for me. So bye Pis etc, it was fun why it lasted.

Happy to see you making new videos despite being in post surgery recovery!
