Its not that youre using references, youre just using them wrong. Use references to get a general idea of poses, anatomy, and character design when drawing fanart. But dont copy the reference. For example you might have a reference photo of the character you intend to draw, a photo of a pose youd like to draw them in, and maybe a reference photo form a cool artstyle that youd like to incorporate. You should take ideas from multiple references and piece them together.

worst art advice is to throw out references

this is actually a great tip, though references are really useful for learning more about anatomy/proportions/lighting or for drawing things you dont usually draw, etc, its good to experiment a lot until you find a style you want to stick with

in my 8 years of art i barely ever looked at references, and i do notice when i draw with them my art just looks too much like real life lol.
so yess references really are very useful, just try experimenting around without using them more often if you're a new artist <3

Use irl photos for reference!!! That makes the style what you see!

i would recommend using like pictures of real ppl for the proportions and stuff especially if ur a new artist trying to figure out ur style and learn proportions

It's beautiful style and coloring. Very pretty art, but I think sailor moon's neck and shoulders kinda needed a reference tbh. Her head is looking really far back and upward over her shoulders. Like someone broke her neck. Like her head is almost backwards looking up but her body is forward and down. No hate at all.

When people tell you to use references they aren't referring to other artists' work. You must see photos of the real world and interpret it. NEVER use someone else's work as a reference because you could be missing details that the artist could overlook or interpret in a personal way (unless it is the case that you want to study their style).

I believe you may be using references wrong, apologies. Avoiding references can be detrimental to learning or the art piece (especially if it is based off a design, dynamic pose or such) and most artists also reccomend it !!

In the love of god, USE. REFERENCES! There's nothing wrong with it, and you will not lose any knowledge, actually, you will just learn and win. The only point is: you will learn to do the item in question on your OWN STYLE.

EVERY single professional artist use references, some of the biggest ones who work for huge company, for example, Chan, Marc and Forrest use and usually they make a warming up just with references.

I understand the point of the artist in the video, but the way they worded it makes beginners and intermediate artists think that its wrong to use reference, or it will somehow make them feel like cheating. And how they said, the proportions get wonky and (obviously) wrong, and if your goal is to get to a professional point, have one thing in mind: LEARN YOUR PROPOSITIONS! and how you reach it? *REFERENCES!!!*

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ if your a beginner this advice could be detrimental to your growth! what I recommend instead is looking at references of irl people or bases this will help you understand proportions and how the face is built so you can add in your own touch while getting the best of both worlds!

What I think she’s trying to say is don’t depend on references too much. Refrences can be removed after you are comfortable with it ( when you learn how everything is constructed and can draw it easily from memory) think of it as training wheels, they can go at any point but if your a beginner it’s better to learn to balance, steer etc. before those training wheels come off!

I usually try using irl people for pose references
and if I want to draw a character then I draw the base first and THEN use a reference to get the details right

When I first started drawing characters I tried to make them look EXACTLY like the artsyle of the show they were from, which was both annoying and difficult. It wasn't until I realized it was okay to draw them in my own style (kinda a mix between realistic and anime) that I started improving.
