Have you come across any good examples of "form follows function"?

My engineering class is using this video to learn the concept. Thank you for explaining the idea in an easy way and for giving really good examples to learn from.

Hey Morna, I just want to say that as a User-Centred Design student, your videos are so helpful to me, as we are not taught enough Industrial Design history and principles, unfortunately. I can even say that I've learned more about ID history and theory than I did in Design School. Thank you for putting so much efforts in your videos! 💓

Really glad that to discover this beautiful channel, I like how you’re delivering the info & examples in sort of spontaneous or less complex ways, this really shows how well informed you’re about design, thank you & btw for me I would choose the traditional Arabic Coffee set which is in my opinion showcase the form follows function beautifully, it contains small coffee cups “size of espresso shot cups” and coffee boiling pot with slightly long arched tip to pour the coffee without any splashing because it gets narrower to the end so coffee pours dynamically perfect each time ! 🐚

Truly elegant designs-- perfectly illustrates one of the core principles of innovation-- indeed, form ever follows function

Enjoyed watching this, i visited my physical therapist, and could observe that all the chairs were designed with the purpose of keeping the back straight. I thought this was a good example of form follows function.

Really video. Thanks a lot. I have one question for you. Do you think the famous Marshmallow sofa 1956 by George Nelson and Irving Harper follows this rule? The round cushions came before the idea of the sofa and Herman Miller stopped production after some issues of stability and cost of production. Form not follow function in this case? Love to hear from you. Best wishes

Interesting examples, thanks!

Here is a question I have: I was looking for "function follows form", and most of the videos, like yours, are inverted: "form follows function".

Why is that? Are they actually two different techniques? Or would it be just a preference to name it?

Well, another example is a baby's milk bottle, the one that changes its color in order to aware of the hot temperature of the milk. As I understand, the function is, first, to prevent, then, the form to prevent results in a changing color milk bottle.

What do you think, Morna?

The Table Noir cutlery designed for restaurant Barr in collaboration with Snøhetta is a product that has form and function into the considerations in the Design.

The cutlery has a stonewashed sruface inspired by the Barley structure if you look at in a microscope, but it also have functional purpose since the patina that it will get when its used just will make it continue look as it original is ment to - so it will have a longer lifetime.

The cut in the handle is an enlarged barley structure to create a connection to the overall aesthetics at Restaurant Barr but it also helps your thump to hold the handle better.

It can be seen here where you also can read about the designstory and thoughts to form and function:
