The famous WW2 bouncing bombs used by 617 Squadron the Dam Busters and designed by Barnes Wallis and his team were initially tested in the NPL testing tanks at this site. The bombs were used to destroy dams in the Ruhr Valley, Germany. Ironically the above was in part to ensure our freedoms.
