FILM DESCRIPTION:
When Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) is 21, his father (Bill Nighy) tells him a secret: The men in their family can travel through time. Although he can't change history, Tim resolves to improve his life by getting a girlfriend. He meets Mary (Rachel McAdams), falls in love and finally wins her heart via time-travel and a little cunning. However, as his unusual life progresses, Tim finds that his special ability can't shield him and those he loves from the problems of ordinary life.

I always find this a bit sad once I think about it. That's because, Tim and Mary had this wonderful first meeting, but as it was erased by time travel later on, as far as anyone but Tim, including Mary, is concerned, it never took place. It's this wonderful memory of his that she now doesn't share.

Also, while it's obvious that their 2nd first meeting has major stalker vibes going on to everyone but Tim, not knowing about the time travel, I also feel like their 3rd and final first meeting could take a darker turn afterwards. Imagine if, after Tim and Mary start going out, Mary and Joanna get to talking about it ("So how'd you guys meet?" etc.) not very improbable since they're good friends and everything, and realize the following:

Neither of them knew TIm previously.

Tim showed up at the party, and lied to Joanna that he was a friend of Mary's. Mary had never met him before.

Yet he seemingly knew who Mary was and that she was at the party, and immediately seeks her out.

And on top of that, he knows to immediately bring up Kate Moss out of the blue = It seems that he knows personal details about her.

If Mary and Joanna ever got to comparing notes, and realized any of that, all of a sudden as far as they're concerned, the situation starts to be reminiscent of You (the TV series/novel).

I guess functionally what Tim is doing kind of is stalking. I'm not criticizing the movie at all, I love the movie. And we the audience know that all of this is explained by the time travel. But nobody in the world of the movie (besides his dad) would know that. I was just overthinking the movie the last time that I was watching it and realized that things could go very wrong for Tim here.

But all of that is not really about this scene. The first thing I said was mainly what I had in mind about this scene, that I think it's made a bit sad once you think about it.
