This is my favorite strokes song, rhythmically ambiguous is exactly how I’d describe it!

The first "so many fish..." and the last "so many fish..." are shifted as well. So many quirky things in this song. Not to mention the longest 7 seconds of all time at the beginning

This song gives me one of my very first memories of trying to find a song for a long time and not knowing how the fuck to search it haha – We’ve all had songs like that in which we just search *ages* for. That was until it randomly popped up on a Pandora radio I used to listen to all the time as a kid. I had gotten a *flood* of emotions, goosebumps, & nostalgia… But get this: I DIDN’T CATCH THE NAME OF THE SONG 😆. That was before Pandora allowed you to see your play history. Though, eventually I finally found it. And man, it’s still one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s like a go-to night/heartbreak/downer kind of song haha. The Strokes are *incredibly* well-versed in how they layer each instrument, including Julian’s vocals, to make both bittersweet & fairly haunting chords – Their dissonant chords they have a knack for are so amazing, too.
All in all; clearly I’m a huge fan haha. And this song will never lose the feelings it gives me.

the easiest way to reconise off-beat rhythms like that, is to imagine im playing Reggae

Sick! I love that I'm getting so many of your shorts recommended to me after meeting you at the Strokes show meetup. Your music theory shorts are very easy to digest, super fun to watch! More Strokes!

Never got into the strokes or indie radio alternative whatever you want to call it, but that riff is awesome. It came up on a radio for the cure on Spotify and I think I’m becoming a fan

I can’t expect Julian to start on the downbeat for the verses, I’m wired to hear him start an eighth before so that the downbeat starts with “many” rather than “So.”

Rhythmic ambiguity is great on synth sequence intros too e.g. Western Promise by Ultravox.
