Even though they look terrifying, they are actually very sweet and docile. I know someone who maintains them in a zoo in Belgium where chicks have been bred with success. He’s the only human the shoebill allows near her chicks.

They are incredibly friendly. If you show them respect they do the same. I know a caretaker of them in a Zoo and they always walk up to him and cuddle with him.
