Purchasing your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device might be a huge leap of faith. These gadgets aren't cheap, and if you consider in the cost of storage, you're looking at hundreds or even thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Both QNAP and Synology are well-known brands in the Network Attached Storage (NAS) market. If you're confused about which NAS to buy because of the brand war between several manufacturers, you've arrived to the right place.

It may surprise you to learn that both QNAP and Synology are Taiwanese enterprises. Given the way they promote the name, I initially assumed Synology was an American firm.

It would make my day if you could also follow me on:

Synology’s Active Backup for Business is our top choice for backups, and for VoIP, Thirdlane Multi-Tenant PBX gets the job done—both keep our MSP running smoothly.

This video is a hit piece. Qnap has far easier at home expansion options than Synology, among other incorrect info being spread. This video is either extremely unresearched or just plain lying.

The reason I bought a QNAP NAS is because they made a 4x M.2 NASbook which is slim and looks nice under my TV. Since I've bought my NASbook, QNAP has made a second generation and a 2.5in version. Recently QNAP introduced their line of wifi routers; one router has a 2-bay NAS and has mesh options, the other is a wifi 6 SD-WAN powerhouse. QNAP is doing a good job keeping me hooked to their environments. A major con for QNAP is the huge learning for QNAP OS; trying to get HomeBridge and NordVPN to work took days. Their app store is great.

I do most of my work by ssh’ing onto my QNAP TS-473A, and entering commands to do things. Setting up containers, etc.
I use it for many things, including training my AI models…I installed a very powerful gpu, in its own enclosure with its own power supply, and connected via a riser.
Qnap is more versatile, and the linux base is not as trimmed down as synology, imho.
Qnap is a clear winner for many reasons, including expansion and future proofing.

I think for the guys with no experience the Synology is good, but this guy lacks in a powerful nas for 4k or nas, it plays 1080p and some 4ks, I used to have the 1520+, 1621xs+ and none are good for HDQ, I returned the last one for that reason, now I have the Qnap Tvs-h674-i5-32g, it is a monster for multimedia, for that after 3 Synology nas I got disappointed with the last nas from synology without embedded graphics..
Too bad.... now I am a Qnap guy!

QNAP has been the clear choice for the last few years. I myself now use the ZFS NAS TVS-h1288X together with the RTX 3060 Ti (so I also use the NAS as a powerful 💪 gaming PC). In addition to that I have a 10G router QHora-301W and a QSW 10G switch. In a word, luxury. But even cheaper solutions are more interesting compared to the competition. For example, the cheapest 2-bay NAS TS-233 offers an interesting CPU with 2GB RAM for basic home use. For more demanding users, the 4-bay TS-464-4G is very interesting.

Lack of NVME volume support is has a big disadvantage of Synology compare to QNAP or Truenas.
