What if the end of the Subnet mask is all 0's if its decimal is 255.255.255.0

At the risk of sounding stupid. How do we know the subnet mask is 255.255.255.x? Are we just assuming that for the sake of the example? All the examples I've done so far seem to. How do we know the 3rd octet isn't 254 for example?

Subnet A 2 hosts
Subnet B 50 hosts
i don't know how to get the subnet mask i have the answer its 255.255.255.252 this makes 6 bits in the last octet in the subnet mask. i've tried anding it but i seems to be doing something wrong can anyone help. this subnet mask is for subnet A
