In Hyper-V 2012 R2 you can expand VM disk without stopping VM. You should turn off VM only if you are using any kind of delta disks like snapshots or replication on current VM.

Hi, thanks for the video. what about if there is a replication running on the vm and i want to extend the hard drive? do i need to extend the replication first or it will be extended automatically?

I am having a problem with this. I cant do this when the machine is shut off It says I cant do it cause it is clustered. so I go to the failover cluster and there is still no option to add a LUN... any ideas?

For me it says that edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtual machine
