Overhead Squat form: Why has the Overhead Squat form so hard?
You've probably seen examples of the crappy Overhead Squat form right? I've seen enough.
Whatever Overhead Squat form you see, very often if you look from the side, you will see the bar being in front and people are not able to hold the bar right over their head.
You see heels coming up, you see the body weight shift back and forward, and much more.
Overhead Squat mobility: Why is the Overhead Squat exercise so hard?
The answer is the Overhead Squat is a real head to toe exercise, which means, that everything between the bar which is over your head and the ground has to work in conjunction and together.
If there is any problem or weakness in the whole chain of the movement, it becomes quickly evident in the Overhead Squat.
Overhead Squat Balance and Overhead Squat Stability
The Overhead Squat requires a lot of balance and stability, a slight deviation of the barbell forward or backward will result in losing the bar.
An example for that is, that people hold the bar in front of their body with the strength of their shoulders.
That is only possible if you don't use enough weight. Once you start out with Overhead Squat workouts and use the unloaded bar, which is 15 kilos or 20 kilos, depending on the bar you are using, you will be able to hold it with the strength of your muscles in front of you.
However, once you get better at the Overhead Squat technique, and you are able to use more weight in the Overhead Squat, that won’t be possible anymore.
Then once the bar goes forward during the movement, it just falls down in front of you. Once the bar goes backward it just falls down.
Overhead Squat tip: Avoid Overhead Squat fails!
If you feel you’ll lose the bar, let it go. Don't hold on to it.
Overhead Squat fails: Why Overhead Squat fails happen?
I've seen enough problems by people trying to hold on to the bar for too long.
If the movement is out of control, let it go and make sure you get out safely!
Overhead Squat focus: Why the Overhead Squat requires a lot of focus
The Overhead Squat not only requires a lot of balance and stability, it also requires high levels of focus!
If you don't focus enough, you will lose the bar.
The Overhead Squat focus is another benefit of the Overhead Squat, as it really teaches you to focus on the Overhead Squat balance and Overhead Squat stability.
Why is the Overhead Squat so hard Conclusion
The Overhead Squat is hard because it is a real head to toe exercise. If there is any problem or weakness within the entire chain of shoulders, thoracic, spine, lower back, hip, knee, and ankle, it becomes evident in the Overhead Squat assessment.
The OHS requires a lot of balance and stability. If at any point of the OHS movement you lose the balance or stability the bar will just fall down in front of you or behind you.
