Spot on Big Z. So much "pop" music doesn't include this contrast therefore creating that monotone vibe which not only dumbs down the music but puts the listener in a coma as well. Creating contrast, especially dynamic (volume) contrast, grabs the listeners attention. Just pay attention to any good orator and you'll notice the same.
