A bog is created when water remains still for many years and becomes acidic... in the case of Volo, it was a lake that was about 100 acres and 250 feet deep. It was created by the receding glaciers that caused indentations in the land. Over time, the ecosystem recycled itself -leaves falling, etc- and the lake became smaller. And over time it became a Bog...

What is interesting about Bogs is the level of preservation... since a bog is very VERY acidic, there is little Oxygen, and little oxygen to break down the molecules means there will be no decomposition... and in Bogs bodies over 2300 years old have been found to be perfectly preserved...

VOLO Bog remains one of the few open air Bogs in the county... and what is cool is the entire ecosystem is literally floating, so if you go to the bog and shake the walkway the entire forest will sway!
