One hint I saw was when using repair tape is to round off the corners. This stops the tendency of something catching the corner and pulling it off

I’ve seen a gentleman take that silicone and put a dab of mineral spirits in it to thin it! Then you can paint it on or even roll it on to it full size. He did a full size tarp that was old and worn to the point where it was ready to be tossed really, but ceiling it with that thinned out silicone seemed like a great idea. When in the field it is very effective to bring patches and gorilla glue as those things can be used in other applications...
