Beta is truer to the original colors and contrast than VHS. VHS has blurrier and darker colors, wich makes it look more contrasty in this case, that's why for some people may think it looks better, it looks more three-dimensional than the original, but that was not intented by the animators, and not always desirable, as it can hide many details and make colors look more dirty.

VHS (Toshiba Via CRT TV On Same Brand)
Betamax (Sony Via CRT TV On Same Brand)
AVISynth (ViewSonic Monitor)
Digital (LG LCD TV)

1. Original: best, no problems
2. AVISynth: lower quality and some white lines can been seen
3. VHS: best color (better than original!), but the main problem is - interlaced mode, which is bad for fast-moving objects, some quality problems
4. Betamax: interlaced mode, lower quality

Prefer the vhs version over the beta one. Just pause at 1:06 for example. I can see better what's on the front rock than on the beta one.

In contrast to many statements that betamax was the superior video format I can't see any significant difference to VHS. More likely the VHS format looks better in some scenes in my opinion..
But both couldn't compete with the digital original.

There is many factors that we don't know here to make a judgement which format has better picture quality. First we don't know how he converted to digital for uploading to the YouTube. Second he probably used modern VHS VCR that has digital picture processors unlike Betamax that last ones released at the end of 80s and lack of this technology by that time. Betamax should have slightly better picture due to 250 horizontal lines compared to VHS which has 240. Late 80s Super Betamax came to market with 290 lines, much improved than 1st generation of Betamax. You need to compare side by side on the CRT TV's to see the real difference.

That’s not digital, it’s 16mm or 35mm, because Sonic CD is a cel animation.

Hmm .... Sonic Boom intro vom Spiel "Sonic CD". Allerdings hatte ich bei meiner Version damals nen anderen Titelsong. da sollen sich Asian und Europe Release unterschieden haben
