He Faked The World Record

The other week, the annual Summer Games Done Quick charity speedrunning marathon wrapped up. They raised over $3 million for Doctors Without Borders, and showcased some really awesome runs.

Unfortunately, a few days after the marathon ended, the community was sent into an uproar when news broke that one of the runners cheated live on stream.

Let’s break this whole thing down.

This whole situation is so disappointing. The base run was so fun to watch, hearing the crowd sing with the music and watching the Twitch chat spam lyrics in sync was great, the keyboard mashing was hilarious, and the commentators were great to listen to. The worst part here is that the run he cheated was an INCENTIVE, we had to raise like $20k to get that DLC run so people definitely wanted this run to happen, but he then goes and does this and renders our efforts irrelevant. I do think that allowing for remote runs like this at GDQs in the future is a great thing, it allows runs that wouldn't work in an in person setting to show up like the rhythm game runs we had this year, and it allows for people who just can't travel in person or would rather stay at their own home to be on the same stage everyone else is, and considering that this was the first case of cheating after four exclusively remote marathons and one hybrid event, I think there's still every reason to keep the hybrid format provided more people don't get the idea to cheat.
The sad thing is that I don't see much reason to his cheating here: he set a world record on his own recently that's pretty much the same time he set at GDQ, he can run the DLC much faster than the second place runner so he just needs to PB for a World Record, and if he did it for popularity, he failed that because there was a run that was 1000% better than this one. The run I'm referring to is the Ocarina of Time TASBot Beta Showcase/Triforce% run which was truly incredible to watch live, showing off a ton of beta content with a storyline linking all of it together to finally get the Triforce and see Breath of the Wild kinda remade in the OoT engine in real time on real N64 hardware, AND to see all the Twitch chat messages physically appear in game also in real time was easily my highlight of the whole marathon and if you haven't seen that run and have any interest I 100% recommend you take an hour to watch it. And if he was trying to send a message... well he kinda failed at that too because his speech at the end was pretty messy and it just doesn't make too much sense anyway. I'm just hopeful we can walk past this and no one else gets the idea to go through with cheating live in GDQ, which I'm incredibly hopeful won't happen since it's a charity event in the end and not many people participate in a charity event exclusively to gain popularity.

This. This is one of the best examples of how easy it would be to cheat if you were good enough at a game. At least this situation taught some people that the argument ”He’s so good, that he has no reason to cheat!” is deeply flawed and completely bullshit.

He cheated to make a point and then didn't explain his point. I can admire someone who sacrifices their own reputation to prove a point about something they're passionate about, but honestly nobody got his point so he essentially did it all for nothing. Sad to see ngl

Standing here i realize
You were just like me
Trying to make history

But who's to judge from right or wrong
When our guard is down
I think we'll both agree
That violence breeds violence
But in the end it has to be this way

Dude clearly was trying to send a message. I mean his quick admission of guilt and how poorly executed the whole thing was. Even telling someone about making the segmented run beforehand was all just screaming I want to get caught. So he did it for whatever message he was trying to send at the end which seemed to be some combination of the unsung heroes and what peak human efficiency could be, but like no one would stop you from shouting out or having on your couch the people who helped route the game or even submitting a run and saying that this is segmented. It was all just poorly thought out at the end of the day and the fact that he said he switched last minute makes me think he knew that and why he wasn't originally gonna do it, but then changed his mind at the last second to try to top his prior run. Hes clearly a very skilled player. Just a shame this is the route he chose.

It's weird to say people are only speedrunning for time in the world record when that literally is what "speedrunning" is. You aim for the best time.

"Not going to elaborate it any further" 😂
When you think you smart but sound dumb. You gotta be ready to back up your actions but explaining them and not throwing a puzzle out there cause you can't.

if he wants to say "I didn't cheat because I didn't try to put it on the leaderboards", then I guess congrats to him for drawing a fine line between actually cheating and just being a liar who misrepresented himself and his game. but he's still a liar, so...

one thing I've learned is, anyone who "won't elaborate further" but insists you "didn't understand" what they said before doesn't actually have anything to say. You don't ruin your entire hobby/passion/job (for some, idk how popular of a streamer he was) to send a message and then not care if that message was understood. It's nonsense, he just wants to give the illusion of some deeper reason for his lie. But there isn't one.
