Dakota's acting is so good when they're hiding under the table. You can see the horror in her eyes and the way she desperately asks "Why won't it stop?" is so intense.

Just a quick Fun Fact about this scene: When Ray is running out of the house to find Robbie while dozens of people are right outside his house photographing the lightning storm. To film the scene, producers hired people on the street to come to the street at the time of shooting with a camera and film so they could get pictures of Tom Cruise for free.

One of my favorite bits of this movie is how in almost everything he's in Tom Cruise plays this suave cool hero, and in this one he's anything but. He has his moments of heroism in it sure, but he's certainly not like that for most of the movie

When I was watching this at nine years old with my parents I remember thinking how similar Ray's behavior was to Dad's. He probably would have done something similar to like making a scary thing seem like it wasn't a biggy to me.

As a kid i always thought the lightening was caused by the Mother-Ship which would be huvering over the earth depositing the capsuls via

But now my theory is different....

i think that the storm is more paralell to star trek....remember the lightening storm that the romulens traveled through that was also a time-warp?

I think this storm is a lot more like that: i think that its more like a portal in which the aliens are traveling cross-dimensions.

Its also possible that not only is it a cross-dimensional warp but that the aliens are able to influence the way said storm manifests.
How? I dont know but i do believe that they are brilliantly causing the portal to act not just as ANY storm but as a storm that FACILITATES and CAUSES lightening.

I dont think the lightening strikes themselves are "Alien-Made" but rather that they are harnessing the lightening that is already being sparked by the storm theyre causing and theyre able to alternate the storm such that they can create as many lightening strikes as they need to at will.

Notice the Blue lightening flash at 1:59??
That, i would say, is natural lightening where as the red lightening is what is being sparked by Alien activity.

All that said, this explains why the aliens not only die from breathing earths air as if they werent smart enough to figure that out ahead time but also why they are naked and dont wear clothes.

I believe that these aliens, as portrayed by spielgburg and H.G Wells, are TELECINETIC!.

I think that they have a gift of telecanesis that runs VERY DEEP in themselevs and their evolution and the Lightening Storm is merely a magnificent manifestation of their Telecanesis.

I dont mean that they can mentally bend a spoon or lift any given object off the ground at will or even that they can, necessarily, "control humans minds".
I think that whatever telecinetic powers that they may or may not have are much more subtle and, yet, all the more powerful for it!

You could say that these aliens are probably more, fundamentally, "spiritual" compared to humans regardless of our thick religious history.
I believe that discoveries of doing things such as "invoking Gods from the universe", for lack of a better term, plays a great roll in how these aliens evolved.

It could be for this reason that they never thought of what could happen if they breathe Earths-Air: because, perhaps, a long time ago they discovered some way to telecinetically make themselves immune to almost any given disease or atmosphere.
If not by vaccines like what humans use then via telecinetically invoking some "spiritual power" from the universe and, perhaps, they figured that once a power is discovered that it not only CAN be used but CANNOT HELP but to BE used similar to our own attitudes about technology....

And if theyre able to do that then, logically, why couldnt they discover how to telecinetically open up portals that manifest as lightening storms allowing them to travel cross dimensions in search of recources as well as genuine curriosity?

Plus it might even be so that it takes ALL of their heads put together in order to make enough power to do such a thing.
Like, the telecinetic powers that they have probably require ALL of their mental focus at once...possibly.

Furthermore: this probably lead to fatal arrogance on their part.
The aliens have probably invoked so much power from the universe not even by tools but via their own telechinetic relationship with the universe that they feel themselves to be like Gods and even though they have found immunity against the atmosopheres of almost ALL the other planets they visitied, still, they were too arrogant as a species to anticipate that MAAYYYBBEEE they arent as God-Like as they thought and that they are STILL creatures.

As for these aliens being naked (because, again, they dont wear clothes if you didnt already notice) this could be because they are asexual repoducers and so, maybe, because they have no sex-organs to keep private at all, they never had that "Adam-and-Eve" experience of feeling self-concious for the first time.

Ever wondered why the aliens all looked identical?
Or why they had no clothes on?

You could say that these aliens are like the "Asexual version of Humans".

Because theyre Asexual reproducers they, probably, have LESS sense of "Individual" and "Self" and a much DEEPER sense of "Species".

If theyre Asexual then itd be the case that they have never known "needing a mate".
They are never worried about their looks or how to attract a mate.

Im sure they have SOME sense of individual given that each of them is its own body but its as if they have a more natural sort of "Hive Mind" and their default conciousness is more in "3rd Person".

Plus, if they have a telecinetic relationship with the universe, which i believe they do, then surely they discovered how to influence their own body temperatures a LOONNGGG time ago.

Clearly, too, these aliens ARE tool makers. Theyre civilization doesnt relay COMPLETELY rely on their telecinetic relationship amongst themselves as well as the universe because they wouldnt be driving those tripods if they had on tool making abilities.

They clearly have knowledge of mechanics as well as how to make lights.
My, belief, however, is their relation to tools is minor and secondary to their telecanises.

I believe their tools (i.e the tripods themselves) are an EXTENSION of their intelligence and not the HEART of their intelligence like it is with humans.

Differently, theyre tools are probably only 10% of their civilization the other 90% is their inherrent telicanesis.

In Conclusion i believe these aliens are an Asexual-self-replicating species that have ingrained Telecanesis that allows them to travel intergalacticly as well as mentally-making storms in order to do so and bring some of their tools with them i.e the tripods.

Those are my theories. I appreciate anyone who took the time to read it!

Oh and as for why the tripods are underground...i still havent figured that one out.
