This family had the biggest plot armor ever, but damn, the tripods still made it perfectly clear how terrifying they were.

The sound design in this movie was incredible. The sound they used for tripod coming out of the water next to the ferry and lifting up over it is something that’s stuck with me for the last 17 years.

07:54 Damn, imagine thinking you escaped by crossing the river, and running away
Only for three tripods to be waiting on the other side of the hill

I love how the tripod fired it's horn like "Did you miss me?"

I'm honestly in awe at how fast the tripods managed to converged on this seemingly rural area without anyone noticing until it was too late. Seriously, within just a few minutes, the place managed to get completely ransacked by a total of 8 active tripods, with more expected to emerge from the ground given the lighting strikes in the background during the last few minutes of this scene. It's almost as if this place was purposely set up by the aliens as a covert harvesting hotspot for when the humans started seeking refuge/escape...

I have yet to find a movie that generated so much tension and hopelessness. It doesn't give you a global or even regional view of what is happening, you view this entire movie from the limited perspective of one group, and it lets your imagination fill it what is happening all over the world.

The whole part of this scene from 7:30 is chilling. The emergency horn *finally* sounds for the town, showing how humanity simply stood no chance considering the attack in that area was already well underway.
And then when Ray and his family turn to the scene around them and see utter annihilation of an area that was safe a couple minutes ago… the ferry tipped over, the town now being attacked by two tripods, three coming over the hill on the other side of the river, and lightning in the background indicating more on the way. Just total hopelessness with no safe place to go.

9 tripods in one area, that.. is... terrifying.

For being PG-13 this movie is terrifying, real genocidal/holocaust darkest aspects of humanity vibes even though it involves aliens and science fiction. Was lucky to see it in theaters when I was around 15 or 16.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the part from 7:35-8:10 is the most terrifying and best-executed? The distant shot of the tripods attacking people and the faint screams in the background, accompanied by the air raid siren, just adds so much dread and realism. They really captured the magnitude well with a lot of these shots and angles, and the part when they were coming over the hill and people desperately running with the combination of all the screams is chilling.

Even though this isn't strictly a horror film, there's definitely enough elements in it. It has given me numerous nightmares over the years and I'm 44 years old. The dead bodies floating down the river, the tripod horn sound, the train that goes past on fire at the crossing, when the tripod first rises from the ground....It's terrifying stuff.

I remember my parents bringing me to this when I was maybe 7 or 8 and desperately trying to crawl over the seats behind us at one point being so f*cking scared this was a cinematic masterpiece

I have very fond memories of this movie when I first watched it in 2005. I remember I left the theater feeling so unsettled, as if it had ignited some sort of primal fear in me. I had some nightmares in the following months (that shot of the tripods on the hill making their horn sound really stuck with me), and when the DVD was released, I rushed to buy it. I simply loved it. 2005 was one hell of a year for movies.

One thing about the Tripods in Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds that has never been quite as potent in any other alien invasion movie before or since is the sheer DREAD anytime they are on screen. The most terrifying colossal machines of death to ever grace the silver screen.

Showing the Tripod coming over the hill would have been terrifying. But somehow the way this was filmed made it even more so. One shot, you see the trees moving and birds fleeing. The next shot we see of that hill, the Tripod is just standing there, silently with a pitch black night sky behind it.

I think this conveys how fast these things are. You look away for a second and they're already on top of you.

That roar of screams when the 3 tripods come over the hill at the end are HAUNTING

There’s something really unsettling about how while humans were fighting in wars against each other, the Martians were seemingly banding together with the common goal of killing us.
