In this tutorial I explain basic camera framing, angles and lens choice. I show that lens size really has nothing to do with framing.

13 years later and this is still an excellent go to tutorial on lenses, composition and angles (... lenses in particular)!

Wow, there's a lot more technique that goes into filming a scene than I thought! I always wondered how top shot Hollywood movies get that "professional-cinematic" look instead of it looking like a student made film. This helped a lot, thank you!

@ZicoSebastian I used the 7D as well! For some shots I used the kit lens that came with it. 16-135mm and a few other Nikon primes that I attach using a $10 adapter from ebay. I used a nikon 50mmf1.8, 100mmf2.8 and 300mmf4.5

This was great information. So many mind numbing videos out there about each piece of what you discussed but this is the first time I've seen it explained with the information combined with useful, relevant references, and so simple and understandable. THANK YOU! The kid is great too, appealing and interesting to watch, but not taking away from the focus/topic of the video.

So informative and well explained! There's so much misleading info on Youtube about focal length. And this is the real science about cinematography. Thank you!

this was very helpful, especially the live demos of different lenses

@Toemta yup...zooming in is the same as changing out lenses... you're changing the focal lenght . The only thing that's better about interchangable lenses is that they're usualy faster, have better focusing abalitles etc. but you can still get same effects if you avoid the weaknesses of your built in lens.

@tosb38 Yes, I have my own custom preset. But in general I use sharpness half way down. Contrast all the way down. Saturation one notch above the middle and color tone I leave in the middle. I use that preset when I shoot most quick projects where I can't control the lighting. If Im doing something I've planned for then I do a custom preset that looks best in that scenario.

@tosb38 Just natural light. No reflector need in this situation since the snow reflects enough light as it is.

A great video, description and explanation. I've been looking for examples with actual footage using the lenses for 30 or so minutes now. Thank you!

@Smoogle In this case I had an assistant who was holding an umbrella over the camera. You can actually see us and the umbrella in the reflection of the eyes at 1:32 :) but normally I would just use a towel or a scarf over my camera. Specially since the Canon 7D can take a lot of beating. If it was a camera that can't handle moisture as well, then I would put a plastic bag over the camera and cut a hole out for the lens... like I did years ago when filming in a rain forest.

@GyzelFilmz Yeah. u can control the DOF using 3 things... Apareture, distance to subject and lens size. For deeper DOF close the aperature as much as you can... stand as far as you can from the subject as you can and then also use the widest lens you have. I will be posting a tutorial with examples of that the following week.
