Relay Otis motor room

Awesome 1960s Otis relay logic motor room with memory, lift chooser and mechanical logic.

This is ultra advanced and was stretching the limits of what can be done with relays. Sadly these works of art are being destroyed and replaced with modern faceless crap.

This amazing relay logic system contains the following....

Memory - It remembers calls it gets and goes and serves them (Much more advanced than a simple relay system that takes one call at a time).

Levelling - At a certain point the lift slows down if it has a call on that level. It must not slow down if a call appears after that point as it is too late.

Mechanical selector - Knows the exact position of the lift using mechanical logic. Circuits are created to show if the lift is above and below a point as well as working out what the lift should do next.

Lift chooser - Chooses which of the 2 lifts serves an outside call based on their positions and what calls they have to serve.

One thing that this lift does not contain is the advanced version of the mechanical logic which gets ahead of itself as the lift speeds up. This was used by Otis on their fast lifts where the slow down point for one floor is before the stopping point of the floor below but only when at full speed. With this system the carriage that moves on the mechanical device has a separate carriage on it that move ahead of the main carriage as the lift gets faster. This allows the lift to slow down at the right time so if going one floor (which would be before the point which the lift even started moving when at full speed). So rather than having to go slow for the entire journey when traveling one floor it seeks ahead as it speeds up and only when it gets to the right point does it slow down. This also allows intellegent leveling.

This was filmed with TopLevels. See his epic lift adventures.....

It is absolutely incredible what the 1960s lift engineers were able to do with this mechanical logic!

That really is awesome! Interesting mechanical floor selector thing, the clicking relays add to the excitement 😁

This is amazing! The floor selector is like a helix. Love that mechanical stuff. Nowerdays they would call this mechatronics.

Also subscribed to top level, glad you two are friends because of the interesting Ecodisc videos.

Interesting to see these again, but "run of the mill" back in the days when I was installing them.
These selectors weren’t used on ac machines very often but was a good way of improving the ride without the extra expense of a full UMV DC drive.
Bottom drive was usually used when there wasn’t the space above the shaft for a m/c room. An underslung car could keep the need for headroom down even further.
It was also very common to have the m/c room at the side...at whatever level there’s space.
I wish you’d stop waving the camera around so much, makes me feel quite giddy.

I notice some odd things. This appears to be a 2 speed AC elevator, but it uses the selector that is usually used on Otis DC elevators with motor generators.

What just happened to all your videos? Where are they and why are they gone, I loved them :( . I hope you're not in trouble or something

REPLACE THE LOGIC! REPLACE THE LOGIC! RELAY ARE WAY TOO OLD! my plc logic is far better and i love ticky tape sounds because theyy are very awsome.
