How Puella Magi Madoka★Magica Grows Its Characters

Thank you to Nunmanji for editing this video:

In a previous collaborative project I took part in with Craftsdwarf, we discussed the nature of Love and Burden within the universe of Madoka★Magica, both videos I recommend you watch for more understanding regarding what I will be addressing in this video. Madoka★Magica is very much a story about the corruption of love, the worth of oneself and the line between selfishness and selflessness, but all of these seem to tie in to one thing that holds them all together:

The nature of maturity.

Sayaka Miki's Theme - Madoka Magica
2 Months - Made in Abyss
Elegy of The Dynast - Hunter x Hunter
Ochihabune - Naruto Shippuden
MSMM Vol 2 Track 11 Vocalise Op. 34 No. 14 - Madoka Magica

I think one of the best examples of this is another conversation with Madoka's mom, when Madoka asks her what she would wish for her mom doesn't even seriously entertain the thought. She thinks of a wish, but instead of fantasizing about it coming true she instead starts to chart a logical plan to achieve the goal. That's real maturity illustrated for Madoka, coupled with her dad's "Her job may not be her dream, but how she lives her life is. She enjoys being challenged."

Thank you SO MUCH for talking about how viewing Madoka Magica as nilhist is completely missing the point! I've been saying this for years. I feel like Madoka is a show not about despair, but about hope, love, and the struggle between self worth, selfishness, and selflessness. It's not about how awful everything is, that's not the point. There isn't pain for the sake of pain. That's why this attitude that Madoka is a dark series and that's all it is has always rubbed me wrong. Like, it is dark, but I don't think it's a dark for the sake of being dark. I'd argue that Magical Girl shows have been built on the same ideals as Madoka is, and it's not that different from a lot of its contemporaries. I mean, Sailor Moon had their main character kill themselves in her past life. And most people feel that Sailor Moon invented the magical girl genre. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. I think a lot of the fluffy magical girl animes were actually a departure from its roots, and Madoka goes back to them. Just in a way more extreme way. I don't know if I'm making sense, but something that always annoyed me is when people dismiss shows like Sailor Moon as being fluff with no substance yet praise Madoka Magica for being revolutionary. I think Madoka was an expansion of what the magical girl genre already was, not a departure from it. A lot of magical girl shows also deals with themes of self worth, love, hope, selfishness and selflessness. It's just that Madoka went further with it. Madoka Magica isn't about despair, and it really bugs me whenever acts like it is!

Speaking of summon/transformation sequences in the Magia Record game, Sayaka's is easily my favorite of the Quintet.

I hate the people who say Madoka Kaname has no character development. She has reasons not to become a magical girl. If the fans refer to episode 10, Madoka and Mami Tomoe save Homura Akemi from witch Izabel. Madoka and Mami fight against boss but they both lose their lives. Madoka is totally unlike Yui Komori (the most useless female protagonist) from Diabolik Lovers.

I really like your Madoka content and this topic was actually really interesting! I sometimes question the maturity themes in the show and especially in Magia Record but only on a surface level. When coming to Yachiyo, Mifuyu, and any other magical girls in the game that are at the very least almost in their twenties or at least exceed the age of sixteen/seventeen, are still fighting and I adore this concept because it shows what mistakes young adults can make in their lives and what consequences it can bring them. Not only that they have to do mundane adult things such as taxes and basically live, but they also have to fight witches and it makes me question how long can they live? (depending on wish I would say is a big reason and how strong a girl is)

But overall, awesome analysis! <3

I see I gave you a sub. That means I've been here at one point.
Nevertheless. I love how there's still a madoka content in the internet. Glad to see it still alive.

I really love your PMMM videos. I liked how you touched on Magia Record, I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on that.

You can't learn from your mistakes if you are dead or witch out.

Homura's wish was different as she wanted to DO something to save Madoka instead of it being done somehow by itself.
Also she made the wish already knowing about witches, so she knowingly dedicates her life to her wish.

As you mentioned Magia Record, I assume you would have read the tie in mangas, (Tart, Kazumi, Suzune, Oriko, a side story)

Not all magical girls made wishes that side stepped the work it takes to get there.

The Pleiades saints in Kazumi are a great example, I'd recommend you read it.

Mami's euphoria about Madoka was not just about being alone, it was a 2nd Chance after she failed Kyoko.

Oriko and Kazumi act as "prequels"; in which Mami meets homicidal Magical girls, framing her defensive stance against Homura's motives.

Kazumi also introduces "evil nuts" (I call them witch nuts) that can be placed inside of a human to turn their nightmare into a witch allowing for the Juubei + Kyubei to always have the upper hand.

Magia Record's anime chooses a different ending than season 1 of the game but it's inclusion of the Void type magical girl/Co ordinators really changes the whole game as Mitama can shuffle memories like Namine giving a spiraling girl a therapeutic session sharing their burden just a bit.

There's so much to be said about how the one thing that could make the best scenario is if everyone communicated openly without judgement, making Mitama and the other co ordinators equally important as Madokami or Akumura.

The best thing we can learn from this is...Therapy is mandatory. It is equal to seeing a Doctor for physical ailments. Do it. 🫂
