When I was a kid, I asked my dad why people back then looked so angry. He said there was a long delayed process taking the picture, try today saying for a few minutes. Rather than hold a smile that long, they just didn't smile at all.

By today's standards many seem overdressed, trussed up, stiff, weathered and stern. Having one's photo taken was unusual and formal. People thought they must be seen to be dignified and in their finest clothes. Unlike today none appeared fat and overstuffed.

You can tell they lived rough lives everyone is rough and tough looking. It makes sense. People had poor diets. No one went to the doctor (or barber) due to fear of surgery without meds. No proper hygiene or understanding of germs. It's a miracle any of us are here at all.

Only the rich could afford having their photos taken in those early years .

Because one often had to hold so long and may had posing clamps holding them rigidly in place they had some time to just stare into the camera. Almost like they are truly looking into time. Until someone looks at the picture, and Meets Their Gaze. I now looked at, and was looked upon, with 170-180 or so years. Some of them may have been born long enough ago to have the American revolution in their living memory. Looking back this way, to the moment their image was recorded. Some may have seen powered flight and the First World War (referred to as The Great War. Pictures of me viewed in my future, will anyone wonder about me?
