Many years ago I dated a ne'er do well shorty with NPD from Northern Ireland (I was young and didn't know anything including my worth). When he came to Australia to meet my parents, he stated privately to me that my mother's accent was stronger than mine, implying with a sneer that I was toning it down. He actually believed that all Australians sound the same.
