Why F-4 Phantom II Fighter Is Such a Legendary Plane

F-4 f4 f 4, also called F-4 Phantom II, F 4Phantom F 4 Phantom II two-seat, twin-engine jet fighter built by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation (later the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation) for the United States and many other countries. The first F-4 was delivered to the U.S. Navy in 1960 and to the Air Force in 1963. By the time it went out of production in 1979, more that 5,000 Phantoms had been built, and it had become one of the most successful fighter aircraft since World War II.

Between January and May, 1972, Lieutenant Randy "Duke" Cunningham and his RIO, Wilie "Irish" Dricscoll, flying F4-J with Fighter Squadron 96 (VF-96) from the USS Constellation became the first aces of the United States Navy of the Vietnam War by shooting down 5 North Vietnamese MiGs, including 1 MiG 21 on 19 January, 1 MiG 17 on 8 May and 3 MiG 17s in a single day on 10 May.

I did the testing on land and at sea of the f-4s . 1973 one hell of a lot of power when you went around the horn and hit afterburner. VF-51 Screaming eagles.

The F-4 Phantom excelled at every aspect of air combat except turning. It had better radar, engines, guns, missiles, acceleration, ceiling, time-to-height, rate of climb and G-tolerance (it didn't break until 9 Gs) than any MiG of that time. And it was a beautiful jet.

Just want to put out that the lack of a gun wasn’t that large of a problem for the phantom, the navy showed this by getting a 13-1 kill rate with phantoms after starting top gun, while the Air Force was stuck at nearly the same rate as before even with the new gun. The biggest problem the f-4 was one of weapon handling and maintaining. The Navy also spent time making sure their missiles were up to the task where the Air Force never realized how poor their equipment was. The AIM- 4 falcon was never used by the navy because it was awful and arguably worse than an AIM-9B (first air to air inferred missile) in terms of pk, the AIM9E is just a AIM9B with off bore sight capability but that was it. The navy used longer range and better targeting weapons and it showed after pilot training. The navy also had a different way of handling the gun pods they used, as if there were 2 aircraft in a fight only 1 would have a gun (same with 3, but with every 2-3, 1 would have a gun). The navy realized that it was the weapons and pilot ability to employ them that lead to success.

I think that the F4 is the best air craft that McConnell Douglas ever made. It was decades ahead of it's time ‼️

4:56 If the plane was flying straight, how did the strafe of bullets hit such a wide target? Is the pilot able to point the gun in different directions while shooting or something?

A greek F-4 fell just 2 days ago during a drill, killing both pilots unfortunetely. According to reports it was flying low altitude (300 feet) over the sea and was asked to make sharp turns when it reportedly crashed for unknown reasons.
