Time for some K-entertainment news with Bella Kim. Today we start with an exciting show we are all waiting for?

We all know what to watch at the end of this month, Netflix’s “Squid Game” Season 2. Well, it has been nominated for Best Television Series-Drama category at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
It’s actually very rare for a show to secure a nomination prior to its release, so it’s definitely making history already! “Squid Game” Season 2 will compete against Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” FX/Hulu’s “Shogun” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.” The first season of “Squid Game” earned 3 nominations at the Golden Globes back in 2022 for Best TV Drama, Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae and Best Supporting Actor for O Yeong-su.
It took home one of those awards as O Yeong-su, who portrayed the elderly participant Oh Il-nam, became the first Korean actor to win the Golden Globe. The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 5th, 2025, so let’s keep an eye out for the result!

Speaking of “Squid Game,” the directors and actors for it gathered together?

Yes, “Squid Game” Season 2 held a press conference on Monday at the DDP Art Hall in Dongdaemun, Seoul. The director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, and the actors, including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Yim Si-wan and Kang Ha-nuel attended the press conference. Director Hwang said, “People watching ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 will realize that this drama is not far from how we look at this world.” The main actor Lee Jung-jae shared, “I personally looked forward to seeing something fresher and richer in terms of story, and I think viewers will feel the same way.” The anticipated series is set to be released on December 26th, the day after Christmas, so join me in marking your calendars everyone!

Next we move onto K-pop. What do you have for us Bella?

K-pop boy group BTS’s “Dynamite” music video surpassed 1.9 billion views on YouTube on Monday. It was the first time the group reached this milestone with any of their songs. “Dynamite” was released on August 2020 and it was the first English track that they released. When the track came out, it hit No.1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100, which was a first in K-pop history. And here they are now with another great milestone! BTS currently has a total of 39 music videos that have surpassed 100 million views.

Our last story is also about a K-pop group reaching a milestone?

Yes, just last week, I covered a story on K-pop girl group aespa’s “Supernova” placing 9th on the UK’s NME. Well, they reached another milestone with this song. aespa’s “Supernova” claimed the top spot on Billboard’s ‘The 25 Best K-Pop Songs of 2024: Staff Picks’ chart. Billboard praised the track, stating, “‘Supernova’ is not only the signature song that opens aespa’s first full-length album ‘Armageddon,’ but it also defines K-pop in 2024. Within just three minutes, the track achieves a perfect balance of innovation and structure.” The song is definitely gaining tremendous love globally, but of course, also in Korea. Earlier this month, the group won 6 trophies in total, including the grand prize, ‘Song of the Year’ at the 2024 Mnet Asian Music Awards, MAMA. And coming up next year, aespa will participate in ‘SMTOWN LIVE 2025,’ which will take place on January 11th and 12th at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
