This is Ian's love song to the Isle of Skye (aka The Winged Isle) which is off the west coast of Scotland (northern father's western child). He was living there at the time, having bought a farm and was helping to pioneer aquaculture (salmon farming). He went on to run Strathaird Salmon, one of the biggest names in the industry at one time, employing hundreds of people.

This album is lyrical gold. ...And the Mouse Police, Acres Wild, Moths, Journeyman, Heavy Horses and Weathercock are all some of the best writing Ian has done. Pure poetry.

Heavy Horses is one of the best Jethro Tull albums. The title track is simply spectacular. Her live version from 1980 is AWESOME

Not a bad song on this album. It remains my favourite JT album. Thanks, JP.

Heavy Horses and Songs From the Wood are probably the best albums for me to convey the sense of English countryside, from farming, hunting and rural living that I love so much

Barlow’s drumming is such an integral part of Tull!

The Gentle Giant nod is spot on - medieval/folk/prog-rock that only GG-Tull-Gryphon-Steeleye Span did so perfectly back then, along with a French band named Malicorne. Tull was peaking with Heavy Horses in 1978, while the same year, Gentle Giant tried to "go commercial" with the terrible Giant For a Day. Good news is, if you love Heavy Horses, you'll get a kick out of Stormwatch as well.

a song about urban decay disguised as a rural folk song - superb :)

Come with me to the weary town
Discos silent under tiles
That slide from roof-tops, scatter softly
On concrete marches of acres wild

Another great Heavy Horses track. I have such vivid memories of these old tunes. Thanks for the reaction! 😎😎

You just get such a hit of British folk music, merged with rock n roll. Be it Scottish, runs through this album and songs from the wood.
Great reaction to a great song.

One of those rare albums that you can play from beginning to end and never hit a song you do not like.

Again, I know it well, and was pleased to see how much you enjoyed getting to know it. I think Jethro Tull could've just kept churning out "rural" songs forever, and made a fortune from that, but Ian got interested in other things. (So I suppose they couldn't have, then, because you need to start with that level of musical integrity before you even write the first note of the first rural song. Or the first progressive spoof that outprogs all the prog. Or the many great songs still awaiting you after you've lived these few years in the countryside, and long, long ago, with them.)

Groove and atmosphere....the string's are awesome on this folk masterpiece...so glad you're loving this album so far.
It's got great hooks on every song Justin....love the drop when Barriemore comes in .. sublime ❤

This song i think is the most uplifting in thier repertoire. It has great movement but they didnt make the mistake of really making too much of a rock song out of it. It always lifts my mood.

Love this song. Love this album, since 1978, when I first bought the 8 track tape! So much English character in all the songs on this one. Makes me want to live in Olde Blighty!

I've been in love with this group since I first heard the MU album in 1975. I'll never understand from my own perspective why this group did not sell in excess of 100 million copies.

I can't tell you how much I love the one beat at 3:02 . It's the little things

One of my favorite songs from the so-called Tull "folk-rock trilogy, " for sure! Fantastic positive energy.

I've always liked this song since buying the vinyl back whenever. But there is another song off this album that I absolutely adore (especially being a flautist) and you'll have to wait to side 2 for that one. Talking about the little intricacies in their music - just before the start of the last verse you'll notice two rapid guitar stabs. After noticing it many years ago and hearing the song over and over again, that little musical quirk has become a trademark of that song for me. It may be nothing much but it is quirky to say the least.
