Although my experience in China has been mostly positive, in this video, I shared four things that I don't like about living in China. I hope this gives you an insight into the realities and cultural shocks of living in China as a foreigner. Enjoy the video.

I started laughing like crazy in the first two minutes!😂😂You are the queen of imitation! I have no idea how can someone spit that way with that sound!! I fully understand you, we Chinese people hate that too!

All the things you said, China improved a lot over the years and keep improving fast, as more and more people are getting well educated thanks to teachers like you. About spitting, it did happens more often 10 years ago in smaller places, but I haven't seen one case in years in 2 and 3 tier cities. As China become more and more open, foreigners will not be a "rare seen species" anymore in the near future. Then people would loss the interest and stop staring at you. May be when that time comes, you would miss the attention then. 😄

The work permit system is universal. When I first arrived in UK my passport was stamped "must not engaged in any employment paid or unpaid". When my work permit was granted my employer had to prove he couldn't get anyone suitable from UK, by advertising in newspaper, and from the whole EU to fill the position before giving me the job. Naturally I was not allowed to change employer without the approval from the Department of Employment in the first four years.
My daughter also took 10 years to get a green card in US and she was on the aliens with special talent visa.
I believe the employment visa in China reflects the international practise.

Thanks for sharing things you don't like about China as well. It makes your video more real and not as one-sided. Hopefully people who watches this will improve from it. Regarding the staring part, I had similar or worse experience. I moved to Argentina in 1976, and I was the only Chinese student in the entire school. I had been surrounded and stared by schoolmates for over a week😢. Luckily there were no cellphone at the time🤣🤣.

The fourth aspect that you brought up..this one actually is true..they do this not just to foreigners, but also among themselves. It's part of our culture 😄😄😄

Please feel free to say no all the time, pushy is a part of culture which I don’t like at all.
When I was a kid every time my parents took me out for a meal, my parents’ friends always kept putting food on my plate. At first I ate the food and say “thank you auntie/uncle” because I didn’t want to show impolite, but they got more and more excited and gave me more food and there were a food mountain on my plate 😅Finally I got angry and decided to say no, and, according to my experience, a lot of people don’t care what you think until you get mad 😩

Seriously refuse or even warn them if you don’t want to do something, you can say “我真的不想,别逼我了”

我完全尊重其他人的选择和肤色。你说的这些毛病一般出现在 50以上的老年人身上。

There are bad persons in China, too. Many things need to be improved in China society. Please kindly be more patient.

There is still room for improvement in China. The real development of China's economy has grown up from the short period of 40 years after the reform and opening up, and the humanistic quality also needs to grow slowly. Many aspects have been improved vigorously, so please give it a little time, and it will definitely become better and better in the future. good

Sabrina, One must always be careful not to stereotype - usually those who do things which bother you stick out more and thus feature disproportionately in your thoughts. I am an American and as you know we have all sorts of stereotypes about ethnic groups and these can be very hurtful and cause unfair bias even if they are statistically accurate. I have a neighbor who is very pushy and is a member of a religious group which is stereotyped for being pushy. I know she is trying to be helpful most of the time so I just try not to let this bother me and create bias.

I went to China in 2008 just months before the Olympic. The taxi driver spits into a plastic bag hanging by the window or door handle inside the car. I can't believe it! I'm surprised to hear it's still like that today but I'm sure it's less. When you're crossing the sidewalks, drivers will still maneuver slowly but gently to go right through. Though I never like China before, I've grown to really admire it now.

The description of Chinese people from you is so vivid!😆I have been in the UK, the people in London and Liverpool may take a look of me casually as an Asian woman👽 but never stared at me so intentionally like you experienced in China. So never mind, just think as they are all stunning with your beauty and appreciated it so they take so many pictures of you!😆And I would love to move to China to see what they are going to do with me as a Taiwanese female.😜

The one thing I disliked was constantly being stared at and THE PICTURES😅 I'd literally just be walking in the mall and boom, here come the aunties ready to take selfies lol

😅. The spitters tend to be either the older, uneducated ones or maybe those from the villages who still do that even in big cities

😂😂😂 The spitting, for real. As a Jamaican myself, I had a big issue with it. I can't tolerate bad hygiene 😩.

Hey Sabrina.
You got to go and get your full Chinese driving licence.
I got mine after a few years in China.
Now I think nothing of driving myself and my wife anywhere in China.
Even Beijing.
The look on other peoples faces when I pull up at a motorway services, and they see this crazy foreigner is the driver.
Many thumbs up.👍

In the past nearly 100 years, Chinese society has undergone significant changes. However, the previous two thousand years have shaped the main spirit and habits of the Chinese people, such as living on a fixed piece of land. The vast majority of Chinese people rarely venture beyond their hometown and simply farm their own land. And so it has been for a very long time until the world entered an era of communication and China was dragged into this process. At the beginning of this process, the Chinese paid a heavy price in blood, death, and sorrow until 1949 when they began to assert their complete autonomy to the world. However, why would others in the world want to play with such a huge baby with nothing to offer except to feed and give drink? It seemed like a losing proposition. However, by 1978, this big baby was able to join the world's division of labor. Although we are a baby, we have the memories and culture of the past two thousand years of development, and we learn and develop quickly. Today, many problems, whether personal or related to narrow perspectives and information, are indicative of rapid development and an inability to change values quickly enough. I believe these will improve quickly. Overall, Chinese people are kind, and most people have no ill intent. Even if expression is lacking or some people hold biases, prejudice is often fueled by shortsightedness and ignorance. I want us to communicate and see a larger world as much as possible, so that everything will become better. You happen to be doing this work, maybe it's destiny~
