Many studies have shown children are unresponsive to the standard loud high pitched smoke alarm alert tone when they're in deep stages of sleep. I've even had a similar experience when I was a child. An alarm went off in the middle of the night and my mind wasn't awake enough to register what was happening. This situation can be VERY dangerous especially when adults are unable to guide the child safely out of the house. If you have younger people in your home I recommend installing a voice alarm in and near their bedroom(s). Studies show children will respond faster if there is a voice telling them what the situation is and what to do. There are even special smoke alarm models where you can record personalized voice message so that it automatically plays when there is smoke.

I recommend getting a smoke alarm that is Underwriters' Laboratories Listed (UL). This means the unit has been put through rigorous testing to ensure it will work properly if it is maintained according to the manufacture's instructions. Most smoke and carbon monoxide alarms you see in popular stores such as Walmart or The Home Depot are UL Listed.

Lastly, getting a little nerdy, there is a difference in the term "smoke alarm" and "smoke detector". Smoke alarms are referred to in the professional industry as a device that both detects smoke and alerts to a fire with a built-in alarm. Smoke detectors are generally used on a fire/security alarm system and they simply detect smoke and transmit a signal to a different device such as a panel.

I have only photoelectric alarms because that's what my house came with. They are all the same type, but some have extra features like a strobe alarm, and 4 are combo smoke/co. They are all the same sensor, hardwired, and interconnected. They are all about 5 years old. And guess what, they go off randomly, usually anywhere from 10pm to 7am. I was able to narrow it down to one alarm, but it seems the only thing affecting it is high humidity, and photoelectric sensors are recommended for higher humidity homes. Since the strobe is so bright, (177 candela, or about 2000 lumens of total light output, ) it makes it unsafe for me to walk down the stairs to get to the exit, in the middle of the night, since the strobe appears brighter in the dark, if there truly was a fire. However it usually goes off for about 10-30 seconds and then stops for a couple months, so wtg?

I have a Smoke Alarm / Carbon Monoxide Alarm combination with Voice Alarm.
It says Fire when there is fire.
It says Carbon Monoxide where there is Carbon Monoxide.

There are also adapter plugs available to allow you to switch brands when you change alarms without changing wiring. You could have gone from the existing Firex (Kidde) alarms to First Alert/BRK without having to replace the wiring harnesses. However, these aren't always easy to find in small quantities.

I have been living in this house for a little over six years now.

I thought you were all my smoke detectors were. I didn't know I had one in the basement.

I had electrician doing some work.

Electrician said why do you have a smoke detector behind your breaker fuse box.

I told him I have a filter behind my breaker box?

So I went outside unhooked it first when outside and tested it and it works perfectly well. So well the neighbor called the fire department.

Then it went back downstairs and put it back up. And I didn't even change the battery out of it.

False alarming must be a kidde issue. Ive had kidde smoke alarms in my house for 2 yeas now and had 4 false alarms within the past year. In my old house, we had first alerts ad they never false alarmed.
