How to Stretch a Canvas for Painting.

I have quite a few large canvases that I needed to stretch and prepare ready for painting. These will be used for my Summer exhibition of paintings at The Royal Cornwall Museum.

I used metre long stretcher bars with added cross pieces to give it more strength. The canvas was 10 metre roll of Cotton Duck 15oz.

The tools used were : a wooden mallet, canvas pliers and a heavy duty staple gun with 8mm staples.

I hope this helps with your own canvas stretching. It can really save you money, especially at larger sizes.

Look out for the next video in the series where I will show you how to size the canvas in the traditional way (no acrylic) and then prime it ready for painting in oil paints.

Best wishes

Andrew

Thanks for this informative video, Andrew. Having never done this, is there a right side to the canvas or does it not matter which side faces front? Looking forward to the next video.

Hi Andrew, great video. Do you use Cornelissen's or Jackson's for stretchers and primers? I used to use the former for years but the latter seem to be cheaper.
