Introducing the Black Coturnix - Michael Rose of Southwest Gamebirds and Rebecca Lynch of Thieving Otter Farm are currently working on the black coturnix lines to perfect the color, temperament and size. In this video I talk about the origins of the black coturnix and what is being done to perfect the new color variation and make them available to the public.

My 2nd black baby just hatched today, hopefully more will hatch in the next day or so. My 1st one was in my last hatch. These blacks were hatched from my multiple color breeding pen. A great breeding experiment 😃

Absolutely gorgeous. I will definitely be reaching out to them. I would love to work on perfecting a line of black coturnix. I believe they would also be a hit with my customers even before they are perfected.

Thank you so much for the information!

I hatched a batch of "Hatchery's Choice" from SWGB and several are a very pretty black color. They're flippin' gorgeous.

Thanks, Terry. Of the ones I won, I got one of the blacks to hatch and it's pretty good looking thus far. Beak and toes are black, it has the "eyebrows" but it's still under a week old and hasn't started feathering yet. I'm anxious to see it grow. One of the others though, I can't even tell you what type it could be since I don't know the colors, has mottled black toes and it wasn't in the marked eggs.

I bought my black coturnix from Kai Peppler.
The first batch spent over a week in the mail so I wasn't happy with the hatch rate (22%).
The second batch were sent by overnight delivery and the hatch rate was better but still only about 50%.
There were a few with white patches and others with brown under tones (1 sparkly) so there is some work to do to get pure blacks. The pink toe problem is frustrating.
They do seem to have 'behavioural issues' too. One of my nicest looking blacks is feather-pecker
I haven't had feet problems with the blacks but a couple of the calico have twisted toes. They are the most friendly / inquisitive though so I'll keep them as pets.

Very Cool! THank you for this information. I had one Tibetan from a shipment of 44 mixed eggs--27 hatched. I believe the Tibetan bred many times with some fees that I had, but I have 5 gray and black quail with dark legs--someone told me they were grau-fees. The info given here was helpful and now I understand better what is going on with these colors! As mine are 3 weeks old, I am looking forward to the how the gray/black patterns change. 2 of them are much darker than the others. And yes, a couple do have lighter toes!

I ordered some quail eggs this year from southwest game birds and I had a zero percent hatch rate. This was my first time hatching eggs so I thought I had done something wrong. I decided to try again so I bought a hen and rooster from a local place and incubated seven eggs the hen laid. I had a hundred percent hatch rate. I was discouraged after the first failed hatch, but after I had the hundred percent I seen how easy it is to hatch eggs.

White markings on the face remind me of black rosecomb bantam chicken. They're marked on hatch, but lose it when growing true feathers.

I know it isn't what you are breeding for but I thought the black tux with the white wing tips was the prettiest bird of them all.

There was a lot of issues with their feet when we got them to Sweden, maybe 30-40% had issues when hatched.
