Trying Nihari & Biryani for the First Time! / Pakistan's National Dish

Have you ever wondered what Pakistani's have for breakfast? Well, that is one thing that we have been wondering, as waking up on a beautiful day and having food that you love is one of life's treats.

So we headed into Tariq Street in Karachi, Pakistan, to go and try what they call Nihari. As we arrived at the restaurant, New Zahid Restaurant, we saw a guy sitting around what looked like hundreds of pots with one giant pot in front of him. This pot was filled with slow cooked lamb and loads of sauce. We quickly learnt that this was the Nihari, the food that Pakistani people have for breakfast. They love this so much that this massive pot of Nihari (which was about 40 liters big) would be filled about 4 to 5 times per day. WOW, that is a lot of Nihari!

Once we found a table to sit down at, we ordered our Nihari with 2 pieces of naan bread. As soon as we took a bite, we fell in love. This Nihari was spicy yet delicious, with so many flavours all in one bite. It's no wonder why the Pakistani people love this dish so much😍

Thereafter, we headed a little further up Tariq road to a place called Allah Walla Biryani. I think the name says it all...we will be trying Biryani in Karachi, Pakistan.

Biryani is amongst one of the many popular dishes here in Pakistan. A simple yet tasty dish made with chicke and layers of flavoured/spiced rice.

After seeing how it's made, we headed into the restaurant to give it a try.

Damn your host didn't explain the food.
Nihari:- it means the food of the morning. "Nihar" means early mornings. Nihari preparation and cooking started at late in night. And was cooked till morning and after the first namaz(prayer) people used to have this as breakfast. Usually this was for labour class as it had the beef feet and legs part and it was nutritional enough to keep one full till afternoon.
The food was so great in taste, the royals and Nobels too added this to they breakfast menu. This dish is an old Mughal's kitchen dish. Developed in Old Delhi, India.

The word "Nihari" is drived from nihar mean empty stomach ...nihari means first food eat in early morning with empty stomach.

Traditionally, it wasn't karachi biryani which had potatoes. Karachi biryani was made like bombay delhi lucknow style. But Sindhi biryani had potatoes. So nowadays karachi has taken this trend from sindh n start adding it. Back some 20-30 years there was no concept of potatoes in Karachi Biryani and its delicious that way actually.
