Headstart: Prof Lizamarie Campoamor-Olegario, research head of Sequre Education Movement, says there is a problem with the “quality of education” in the K12 curriculum as teachers fail to tap on the “higher order thinking skills” of the students since they focus more on the traditional style of teaching which involves “listing” and “memorizing.”

I agree with what Ms. Davila's suggestion to NOT USE elite students (meaning intellectually better or advanced) in the research or study that they are conducting for the public schools because, let's just keep it real, *there are far more students who are intellectually-challenged.* The results of the research or study WON'T BE REALISTIC if the sample size you will use are "elite students".The will only represent a small minority. The FOCUS of the research or study should be the VAST MAJORITY and these are the students who are "intellectually-challenged".

1st point was very clearly explained and hopefully will be implemented correctly once and for all. The 2nd point, this is the government's responsibility. The Philippine government should dissiminate information to all employers that a K-12 highschool diploma will suffice in applying for certain jobs. The goverment should actually enumerate a list of such jobs. And the government should make sure that employers adhere to the new hiring policies. Like in the States, 15-year old teenagers can actually apply for a job and be hired as long as they have a signed parental consent to work. I have a couple of cousins who actually did so. And not at the age of 18, but 15. The Philippine government can enact a law like the one in the States wherein "14 and 15 years old may work outside school hours in various non-manufacturing, non-mining, non-hazardous jobs under certain conditions...14-15 year olds cannot work over 8 hours a day, with no more than 3 hours on a school day, and over 40 hours a week, with no more than 18 hours per week while in school. Minors are also not allowed to work before 7am or after 7pm respectively." *If the lawmakers in the States can do that, I'm pretty sure the Philippine government can do it as well.* Just make sure that no one is cutting corners or someone is getting exploited or treated unfairly. Enforce the law to the letter and make sure it is being followed. If someone violates it, then the appropriate penalty must be imposed.

Thank you for guests who speak sense in a manner lay people understand.
Ma'am Karen, may I suggest that you give time for the guest to finish her thoughts? There are times she's cut in the middle of expressing her ideas and the conversation suddenly shifts to another sub-topic.
Thanks for such enlightening conversations.

remove the minor subjects in college (eg, PE, Rizal, Social Sciences) and move them to K12. This way, college will shorten to 3 years. When taking Engineering for instance, subjects should just be Maths and Engineering and nothing else. When taking Medicine, subjects should just be Sciences.

Magkaroon ka ba naman ng education system na ipapasa mo lahat ng students kahit hindi naman pumapasok or hindi deserving. Pilit pinapa-akyat sa nexf level kasi:

1. Para makasingil ng voucher
2. Para tumaas ang school ratings. More graduates, more incentives
3. Mapapahiya ang school kapag maraming bagsak. Baka wala na mag enroll

Both of them have very valid arguments. prof’s argument was about the quality of education (which is actually the point of this discussion) meanwhile karen’s was about the majority’s access to education. Karen asked the right questions, I think education is her strength and not politics xx

Actually the 2 years is vocational connected to Tesda. Preparing students for employment upon graduation. DepEd is supposed to be link with industries.

Let the teachers undergo an exam with questions like identifying the main idea of a paragraph, logical organization of ideas, what is the lesson that you got in the story you read. Etc. Those teachers who got higher scores will teach English. We must give emphasis on the English language because it is the medium of instruction and the language used in the exams here and abroad. Mastery of the language on the part of the teacher and the students is the key for the improvement of our educational system. Regarding the mismatch of the skills of the graduates and the skills needed in our industries the deped and the CHED should consult our local companies about the lacking of skills of our graduates who entered the labor force so that we can conduct seminars about it to the next graduates it K-12. All master teachers should be the leaders or examples in teaching the needed skills.

The word is "hybrid" or "blended" for a *combination of* face-to-face classes AND home study e.g. face-to-face every Mon & Fri and home study every T-W-Th.

Even with K12 it's just 2 and a half percent of GDP. We need 6 percent dictates by United Nations.

K12 is not effective in the Philippines. They should bring back the old curriculum. I graduated high school which is equivalent 10th grade now, then took Civil Engineering and graduated within 4 1/2 yrs, so my years of education primary is 6 yrs, secondary 4 yrs, college 4.5 yrs. I took 18 units of master. When i migrated to US. My degree was evaluated and i was given US equivalency which I used in my work as an Engineer. As long you have bachelors degree you are most qualified in the US particularly in the field of education, nursing, engineering and medicine. If they bring back the old high school program then it saves a lot of time and graduated early.
