History of the iPhone Camera

When Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, no one imagined that in just 10 years it would become the most popular camera in the world. But it may not be surprising to photographers like Chase Jarvis who famously said, “the best camera is the one you have with you.” And owning an iPhone means a camera is with you at all times. A camera that lets you focus on pointing and shooting rather than adjusting dozens of complicated settings. This level of convenience is a big reason why it dominates the digital camera market today. But the iPhone’s camera hasn’t always been thought of so favorably. Let’s go back to 2007 and take a closer look at the camera included with the original iPhone...

I don't care for the locked-down nature of iOS or the cost of the iPhone in general, but my favorite thing about all of them since the 3GS has to be the camera. They've all been great since then. My 4S and 5S still take GREAT pictures and shoot great looking video.

I got a real camera months after I got my iPhone 7 Plus and soon decided I actually liked my iPhone camera more than my 20MP camera. The colors are more beautiful and vibrant, takes amazing video, has good stabilization, takes pretty good low light/night photos, and it has all the different settings like pano, timelapse, etc. Also, Portrait Mode is a AMAZING camera setting I use all the time.

Backside Illuminated Sensor is a sensor that moves the metal contacts back to allow for more light capture.

The iPhone 6’s camera is still brilliant today

You should have mentioned how it compared to the competition back then. To say they were criticized by the quality of the very first camera is very lacking without specifiying what best option was available.
