Deck stain can come out too dark when you over apply the stain. The deck stain may also have trouble drying properly or curing fully if you used too much stain. The only way to fix a deck stained too dark is to remove and reapply the stain. Prep is very important for reapplying the stain in a way that will not be too dark. Staining the deck evenly is important for ensuring the deck stain isn’t too dark a second time.

How do I prep to reapply the stain when the deck stain is too dark?

Start by applying a deck stain stripper, then power wash the deck to clean it. Let the deck dry fully for at least 24 hours, then go back and spot sand any areas that need some additional care. You will not be able to remove all of the solid stain from the deck, but the goal is to remove as much as possible without heavy sanding.
