The engine revs ... Gumballs light up... wide open and slightly sideways with tires screaming... then the siren... cinema perfection

That V8 Startup. If bad intentions had a sound....

Hearing this LOUD in the cinema when first came out. Heaven.

The engine is a Ford 351 Cleveland, with cherry bomb mufflers. Very similar sound, if not exact, as the '68 Mustang in the movie Bullitt. That engine was a 390, also with cherry bombs. I loved the sound so much, I put cherry bombs on my first car, a 1971 Mustang with a 302. Great classic sound.

This car was a actual Victorian police highway patrol car, Falcon 4 barrel 351 C
(Built a few years after the US stopped making the Cleveland)

Pursuit Units may be intended to follow the Target Vehicle until it either Crashes or Runs out of Fuel.
Thus Long Range Fuel Tanks may be part of its purview and sufficient speed for it to remain In Contact with the Target Vehicle.
Physical Contact with the Target Vehicle is not intended.

Intercepter Units on the other hand may have slightly less Range, but greater Power, since their purpose may be to Execute a P.I.T. Manoeuvre (precision immobilization technique) or similar, on the Target Vehicle.
Because of the skill required to Execute such a Contact Manoeuvre, not only will the Driver be Better Trained, but because of the associated danger involved, be a Solo Officer.
Additionally the front end of the Intercepter Unit may have some degree of structural reinforcement to better survive Physical Contact, with certain Critical Elements relocated into the rear storage compartment.
It is also highly likely that it will have markedly better Braking than a Pursuit Unit.

Max's Pursuit Intercepter was thus likely a hybrid of the Two Original MFP Designs.

I had an xb 351 when I was a young pup and definitely just sat in it in the shed with the motor running and by god I wish I still had her

It’s the part around 0:30 that always gives me goose bumps (no pun intended) just that kind of cut and rumble as it springs back to life. What an awesome sound!

I have heard that sound so many times over the years working on cars, but it never gets old. Those old XA, B and C models all had a unique tone to them.

Sounds great through a home sound system. This was not the film that introduced me to the V8 however. That honour went to The Driver starring Ryan O'Neal released a year earlier, in 78. I currently have 2 V8 engined cars - An audi S4 4.2 and a BMW E39 M5 5.0 v8.
Love them !

This sound and scene is one of the reasons I imported a black Pontiac Firebird from the US when I grew up. Sure, a Firebird ain't a Ford Falcon but ... Smokey and the bandid are fun too =P ... and Good luck finding a Ford Falcon in my pay-grade range haha

My HQ statesman had a 308 with twin exhaust and to this day is still the best sounding V8 I’ve ever owned. If It wasnt stolen from my driveway about 30 years ago now I’d still have it as my weekend cruiser. 😢

The director is genius, The muscle car pulls up for chicken. Pumping the throttle getting the revs up. Flash to old school cop car indicator lamps. Dropping the clutch, brutal holeshot, tires squeal. Then click on the siren. Quite a complex sequence.
