The realities of metal detecting in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This video shows the realities of metal detecting in Scotland. Even with an expensive machine like the XP DEUS 2 which costs £1,400 or $1,750USD or $2,800AUSD or $2,500CAN Dollars nothing is a given!

I’m always conscious that when you watch my videos you see me finding silver coins and hammered coins frequently but that’s a skewed view of the effort that I put in.

What you don’t see is the 100’s and 100’s of holes that I dig that produce junk and rubbish. You also don’t see the days when I go out for hours and don’t find anything at all because I don’t have any footage to produce a video!

Metal detecting is about research, technique, quality equipment, the law of averages and LUCK! 🍀

The more holes you dig the greater your chance of a good find because on average I get one good find for every 8 to 12 holes I dig, so on an average day I might dig 100 holes just to produce a 30 minute video with 6 or 8 good finds.

It’s not easy but perseverance is the key!

We all have bad days detecting, even me! But you’ve got to stick at it!

Many thanks and happy hunting

John

When I heard your shovel "clank" when it hit the ground, I thought, "Yes, that ground is definitely frozen at the top."

You know what, I'd watch you detect a paved car park.
I'd learn everything about the area and go away smiling.
Cheers to another day! 🥃

i have always appreciated that in most episodes you regularly mention how long its been since your last good signal, how much junk you've uncovered before the live dig in progress, how long its been since the last coin, and so on. And the sound of your shovel hitting the ground was a really good indication of how cold its been.

Those days happen to the best of us but you know what I'd still watch you dig can-slaw all day just to hear your stories!

That happens more often than not. Even in places you would think no one has been on (wishful thinking) for a couple of hundred years, the pull tabs abound.
