That’s one beauty of ships. It’s only a shell, and with a bit of time, effort, and several additional boatloads of money, you can put whatever tech you want in it.

As an old coast guard vet, who stood a shit ton of watch, that watch alarm is pretty cool.

This is how we pilot in the air to a certain extent. Obviously the amount of time you can leave it unattended is seconds or minutes, but the concept is amazing. So many people don’t know what pilots really do, and this is a good analogue.

Imagine the watch alarm goes off just when you’re taking a huge shit💀

Someone took pride in that boat, definitely spent some money on it.

The boat knows where it is at all times.

Hey there mate, just finished my first year of marintime university. Studying to become a navigational officer myself and its ryly interesting how much of it is automated. As my professor said, the most important device on the bridge is a coffee maker, so you can stay awake and make sure you don't crash into anything.

one season I was taking a boat up to Alaska from Seattle, auto pilot went out like 2 days in and we had to hand steer the entire way to Ketchikan. Wheel watches were a lot more interesting for those few days.

People forget the naval innovation we had back during WW1 is still used today, just got more advanced.
Ships from the 70s are still as advanced as some planes today.

I find it so funny seeing crabbers in the bay all terrified not to hit anyone cause they’re used to being miles away from any other boat. You hear more calls over 16 from crabbers than everyone else combined

I worked on a crew boat in the Gulf of Mexico, we worked for different oil companies doing maintenance work on oil production platforms. 150’ long, aluminum hull, it had 5 CAT 3412 engines. It had an auto pilot unit on it, but it didn’t work. So everywhere we went was steered by hand. I would literally sit/stand and steer the boat with a big ass stainless steel steering wheel the size of this one in the video. The boat had all of the other modern technology like radar, AIS, etc. but no auto pilot. It didn’t have a dynamic positioning system either. So when we would unload/load cargo at a platform I would hold the boat manually using the 5 engines and the rudder. It took skill, and skill I had. Good times.

It's absolutely amazing about how much this young man knows about sailing. When I was his age, I was still learning how to change the oil in my car or how to talk to girls. I failed miserably at both endeavors.

So that’s how we got that one video of that big boat running straight through that small boat

Not me thinking "oh i wonder if that watch alarm could wake someone up if they're a light sleeper" like you be a light sleeper on a damn boat 💀

Speaking as someone who's worked on boats and been growing up in a fishing community, the watch alarm has saved countless lives
