hydroelectric power plant uses salient pole synchronous generator bcoz of it's property of operating at low speed.salient pole generator can't operate at higher speed as like cyllindrical synchronous generator bcoz weight is not uniformally distributed here hence a very high centrifugal force will damage the device, so everywhere low speed is required salient pole synchronous generator is required. it's speed is low so no of poles is large hence it's diameter is also large but length is small.
